FDC Bypass causing steam engine like smoke?

Hey all, the deuce I bought from 91W350 is great, but it smokes like a freight train! (Not that I mind it, but the neighbors might start complaining) Anyways, I looked at the sticky about turning up the IP, and it looks like it is set at the factory setting, but there is a placard stating that the FDC has been bypassed. Could this be causing all the smoke? Let me know if this has been asked before, I'm still new to searching on this place!

It could cause the smoke if the fuel wasn't turned down when the FDC was bypassed. If it's smoking a lot you could be getting too much fuel which will result in dangerously high EGT. Might want to get a pyrometer before you burn the engine up.

Yeah, that's another reason I want to figure the smoke problem out. I would like to solve it without a pyro if possible and try to keep the truck as stock as possible.

These four I have been driving since you bought that one are mild mannered. That thing has power to burn and I miss the smoke. I am sure we could work out an equitable trade! I posted the same thing a while back and some of the guys said it looked normal to them. Maybe we should just swap pumps.... I would love to have that truck back! My friend tells me if I do not want to sell it, I should not put a price on it, he is correct. I have that seat bottom I promised you. Glen

White smoke is steam (head gasket, cracked head, cracked block)
Bluish smoke is oil (rings, valve guides, scored cylinders)
Grey/Black smoke is too much fuel / too little air (many possible causes)

So what color is the smoke?

Yeah, that seems a little excessive. Did you ever measure how much boost its making? Low boost would cause black smoke. I would think that if there's an FDC bypass sticker on the engine, then it was *probably* done correctly. But since you said that the truck seems extra powerful, then maybe not. *shrug*

I would suggest turning the fuel down. When I bypassed my fdc I ended up turning it down 4 turns which is a lot. My adjustments were made using a pyrometer and I alkso adjusted the droop screw a bit to reduce the smoke when you are working the truck.

I had done a thread on this issue and I used two pyrometers one before turbo and one after to answer the question of temperature drop through the turbo.

I will post my final bit of information when I can type on a regular keyboard instead of this wretched laptop.

Now i have mine turned up pretty far. But it looks like it smokes as much as mine. As the engine picks up RPM's and the turbo catches up the smoke starts to clear. It looks normal for a FDC that wasent reset after bypassing. Put a pryo on it if your loading it on hills. So you will know when you are pushing it too hard. But emty you will love the get up and go.

This is the video I like of that old deuce, but in this conversation it is not really fair as I picked the steepest hill around here and made it work all the way through. Not overly long and shifting around 2000. I just do not run them as tight as some people. I could not tell you if this truck will even make red line. I ran it up to 2400 once, sounded plenty tight enough for me. When I posted this one before, some guys said it was burning oil by the gray smoke in the first half. That is the sun shining through the smoke, same hill, I crested, went to the bottom of the other side and came back, in the second half the sun is shining on the cloud, not through it. My brother was my camera man. I really miss this truck.... Maybe someday he will get tired of old Smokey and I can buy it back..... Hopefully not for a little bit though as I just bought two with winches.... Serious case of sellers remorse going on here.. Glen

My work deuce smokes a lot before the engine hits a good operating temp.

Once I have driven it a while the smoke clears up unless I let it pull down around 1500 RPM.

I remember convoys in Germany where you could look back a see a fog of smoke along the route due to drivers lugging the engines down.

Almost makes you want to run the exhaust out the side at tire level so you can share with more people.

I had one of the rice cars with the buzz can muffler and a loud (thump, thump) stereo pull up next to me at a stop light when I was in my F350 turbo diesel. It has a custom program and if I haven't gotten on it for a while there's lots of soot in the pipe.

All that thumpin' and buzzin' just pissed me off. I noticed he had his windows down so when the light turned green I made sure I got a little ahead and put it on the floor. I guess the tail pipe was right at his drivers window because I could see black chit blowing out the passenger window of his car.

Unfortunately for him, it had just rained so I was getting major wheel spin and not really speeding up much. He disappeared in a cloud of smoke and I saw him pull off real quick into a shopping center. I felt bad for about 15 seconds; but I got over it...

Haha Glen, I'm sorry but you aren't getting your truck back! I'm kinda falling in love with it myself... As for the smoke, I will turn it down or get a pyro eventually, but for now I'm not running it real hard and I've grown partial to the smoke, so I'm just going to leave it as is for now! Sorry it took me so long to reply! I'm getting married tomorrow!! (maybe we can drive off in the truck! . Thanks for all the help guys!!!
