Finally got time to strip a little paint off of M998 #2 that I picked up last week, looks like turns out to be from the Texas Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, Company F (San Antonio) vehicle #81, a bunch of Apache, Chinook and Black Hawk jockeys, pretty cool!!

@Coug that was pretty good fuel economy for all the luggage that you're carrying. The dang things are only expected to get 12mpg unladen, I think.

I spent the weekend removing and painting the troop seats and other bits and bobs. Obviously the fresh, green paint isn't going to perfectly match the weathered green real CARC on the rest of the truck but it'll match better than desert tan.

I started off by painting an old school, metal fuel can and its mount. The Gillespie Coatings in a rattle can applies very evenly and is very forgiving. The fuel can turned out very well so I pressure washed the troop seats and started on them the next day. I also have a little black and brown to touch up those areas, if needed.

In other news, I tried to order CV boots for 7k axles. The inner or "plunge" boot is on lengthy backorder from several vendors, just FYI. AMGEN is sending me the outer boot and will ship the other when it comes in.

Maybe time to remove the outer and go to NAPA or another mom and pop auto parts place with the inner and see what looks like it might fit?

Rarely do these boots fit only 1 vehicle. (In my experience. )

Was on the way back from a local FMTV roundup (other military vehicles welcomed to come, I was the only non-FMTV/LMTV though) and decided to take it across the scales. Local State Patrol turns the computer screen around when the scale is shut down so anyone can weigh their trucks)

So weight of the truck as pictured above, a few miles after stopping at the fuel station to top off the truck fuel tank and trailer tanks (55 gal plus 5 in gen)

Front: 3760 lbs
Rear : 5640 lbs
Trailer: 3560 lbs
Total: 12,900 lbs

Add a bit for me, and I'm just over 13.1k

Fuel economy, mixed driving including some 65mph on the highway, 10mpg.

Of that weight maybe a couple hundred lbs is camping gear and food, 6 5 gallon diesel cans filled, 3 5 gallon water cans filled, 1 5 gallon propane tank.
Trailer tongue weight is in the 200-250 lbs range as I am capable of lifting it by myself if necessary (but only on level ground) so that would be a couple hundred off the truck total weight (9400 according to the scale)

Next weekend when I have it back as a 2 man troop carrier but towing a car trailer I'll weigh it again.

I've already done one axle with civilian, generic boots. They definitely work, they just feel thinner and more flimsy than the correct part. While they are certainly better than driving around with a hole in the boot, they will probably tear the first time they are subjected to any kind of abrasion if taken off-road.

I'm an M1123, so it's the 4 speed.
I hit speeds as much as 65 or 70 for short periods, but mostly I cruised at 60 mph, even in the 70 zone. I wasn't in a particular hurry to actually get home (it's just over an hour in my car anyway).
The worst tank of fuel I saw in this truck (about 9mpg) was basically the same load, but I put her up to 75mph for a few spots just to see how she would handle (verified by GPS as the speedo only goes to 60, and is inaccurate over 45), with the highest speed I've hit being 78mph.

Actually, it wasn't too bad. First time I did it with badly out of round tires it was pretty bad, but now with nearly round tires and centramatics it's not bad.

We had a huge storm on Saturday. Firefighters are still working in the city. There are places where electricity has just been restored.
The video was taken by my daughter when we went home. We did the last half mile in an hour because we could barely find a street that didn’t have a large tree lying crosswise or there would have been no torn power lines.
We've been carrying food and drink to the Firefighters for two days.

Cam, after my alignment and addition of centrimatics I pushed mine down a long straight downhill road at 62MPH. Super stable. Wants to go straight and is not twitchy in the least.

Never will do it again with the 3-speed as it killed my hearing, but I will be installing the 4 speed finally.

Using the stock suspension alignment as a civilian H1, with 24-bolt HMMWV rims wearing stock Goodyears made in 2008 [IIRC].

Got passed by 8-10 HMMWVs, each with a single soldier in them driving. All appeared to be brand new, none of them had a top or doors, but had a long box strapped to the rear area that looked to be the right size for a 4 man soft top. A less than common occurrence out this way for sure.
My guess is the local National Guard unit got some new trucks, as there isn't anything else military related out the way they were headed.

I had to laugh, I was thinking every thing I buy, I see tons of them out there, last was a white GMC Dually, they are everywhere BUT I have not seen another H1 military or not in the last year and a half I have owned M998 #1

I played chase vehicle just in case any of the other trucks on our drive broke down.
None of them did on a 140 mile loop we drove, including a couple thousand feet of elevation change.
This is the halfway point of the convoy, in front of the little church in Elbe, WA. A couple WWII jeeps, one post war jeep, an old ambulance, a M151 Mutt, a CUCV, an XM-161 Alley Cat, and the M1123 with the car trailer.
Fun note, with the BEOD and car trailer, averaging probably around 40 mph, I ended up about 11.3 MPG for the day, 272 miles on just shy of 24 gallons

I have the flag tied to the top lifting rings and a bungie at the bottom. Was told it doesn't even look like it flutters at all when driving down the road.

HMMWV Intake manifold port matching today before reassembly.

Heads are very close on my 998 and did not need any matching. If so that of course would require upper end r&r.

Example of amount of excess material/flow restriction prior to cut/blend.



Finished work with some throat blending into the manifold.

I put together the first of my 24 bolt wheels yesterday with a Trailworthy bead lock and new (2013 date code never mounted) BFG TA tire.
So today I took it to the tire shop and it only took 1.5 OZ to balance, I am liking this combination so far!!!!
Also looked pretty darn round on the balancing machine

I know, wrong camo pattern, but it looks better than ACU pouches.
Middle pouch did not install as nicely as the outside 2 did. Inside pouch is VFAK that I need to put the Red Cross on. All 3 are Blackhawk. First pouch is held using provided malice clips. Second is using the attached PALS strap and weaving in thru the webbing, is currently holding small green first aid kit (less than 1 pound). Third uses the provided PALS straps but they are built more rigid and seem to hold the pouch higher on the webbing, this pouch has less than 1 pound of gear in it.
