Got the tires changed. Took all weekend but looks and drives better

Opted to set up tires to run in the same direction so the tread looks the same on all 4 corners.

Also adjusted the handbrake and it now holds it still.... WOOHOO. Also out n a new EESS module.

Spent most of the day mounting 4 new ATs on 24 bolt rims with TrailWorthy bead locks, gunna be sore tomorrow (read I am getting old LOL)

Just word of caution, I purchased two of the 24 bolt wheels from Trailworthy, they were a good deal especially when combined with bead locks and the wheels were in very good condition, the only caveats are they were shipped with new nuts and o rings, the o rings were the much more common and cheap 8 bolt o rings, I would of course never use those.

I had already purchased 120 grade 8 locking flange nuts (Built 5 wheels total) and 24 grade 8 regular flanged nuts for "assembly and leak testing" then I would blow down the tires and replace every other one, torque and then the other 12 and torque.

The nuts supplied by TrailWorthy appear to be grade 2 (no markings) and non locking, I decided to use them for assembly but could feel them start to yield before reaching my target for assembly of 110 LB-FT so dump those if you ever get any..

Wife's truck has had the very, very occasional "episode" where the fan doesn't engage. It seems to happen if the truck sits for a few weeks without being driven. If I unplug the TDM, the fan engages so that rules out the control (cadillac?) valve.

Over the last few days, the problem is finally more consistent so I'll try the troubleshooting procedure in the TM and try to determine if it's the thermostatic switch or the TDM.

Simple fix. Make sure you send your wife on errands every day so the rig does not sit. Keeping her busy will make your life easier and your rig will not need fixing.

Surprised you didn't think of that.

Good to hear someone found the TM's and trouble shooting guide. Makes for factual understanding right at one finger tips... Then again the tips here can be good too. Waiting on TOBASH's Utube stardom. 📺

Crossover thermostatic switches are a common fail point and key to operation. Make SURE to get the quality OEM switch. Know your supplier. (blue tag)

If it is old and funky change it and sleep well. One of the better HumV upgrades / money spent IMO
Not a fan... haha... of just swapping stuff & shot gunning, but old and unknown, its action intermittent / questionable... R & R.

Keep the TM's handy & dry.......(y)

Get it RIGHT now... as winter is right around the corner, CAMO

Grrrr....

There are 2 thermostatic switches called out in the parts manual-

One is screwed into the piping near the front of the engine and the other is screwed into the side of the passenger's side cylinder head. It seems to me that they both operate on the temperature of the coolant.

Which one of these controls the engine fan operation? What does the other thermostatic switch control?

I'm looking at the 24P-1, Section II, Figure 66.

Edit- Nevermind, I figured it out by looking at some of the vendor websites. The one in the cylinder head is the "advance" (for fuel delivery?) and the one in the crossover piping is the fan switch.

Whats the part number for the fan thermostatic switch? Thanks. Think mine isn't working.

Replaced my leaky fuel pump (what a pain) and replaced some old fuel and vent lines. Changed a leaky surge tank hose while I was at it.

Finished my abbreviated troop seats with 3 bows. Going to shorten the bows and attach some OD canvas which will extend out for an awning while camping.

I replaced the rear differential and brake lines in my 1986 AM General M998. Now it actually drives in "H", not just "HL", which I know is murder on the truck on high traction surfaces.

The differential I took out was original to the truck, so I'm willing to accept 34 years and 87k miles as a decent service life and it died of natural causes- probably the reason it got surplused anyway.

I got all this done just in time to drive it on the beach at the Cape Lookout National Seashore next weekend, which I'm really looking forward to.0911201258_HDR.jpg0911201307.jpg0912201347_HDR.jpg0926201732.jpg

One of the guys at work was a HMMWV driver during his time in the Army and he told me his motor pool Sargeant told him to always drive in HL - even on base 🤷‍♂️.

That is completely antithetical to the TM, but his time in the service was during the time my HMMWV would've been putting around Ft. Bragg. Not saying he drove my M998 back in the day, just that maybe that was the prevailing thought process when my HMMWV got the most use, contributing exponentially to a dead rear diff. 🤔
