What the Heck is This CUCV Part?

Just a quick question. I’m still getting to know our 1985 CUCV M1009. I was tinkering around while looking at the batteries. Behind the radiator on the drivers side I found this wire and a round reddish looking piece (Picture on Left) on one end of the wire. The other end goes towards a plug looking piece of metal (Picture in Right). Does anyone have any idea what this is and if it looks right? I almost wonder if it is supposed to be attached somewhere? Thank you in advance for any input.

It looks like the connection for your combination or as it's also called the proportioning valve for the brakes. Long story short, if there is a loss of brake pressure this will trigger and light up the "Brake" light on the instrument cluster. In the picture, it appears this connection is up underneath the radiator? If I am correct, it should attach to the top of the combo valve. See picture.

Hi Scooter! Thank You very much for this information! I will look into that and see about reattaching it or replacing it all together. Have a great day!

Certainly,

Looking at the larger pictures you took on my computer rather than my phone, I can see the combo valve and it does look like the connection is missing on the top of it. Enjoy the journey, these forums are fantastic!

Interesting. Mine works on my 85 M1009. I can double check on mine tomorrow but I'm pretty sure that's it.

Here is mine, it looks like yours is missing the black retention collar part. You have to squeeze the collar to release it from the combo valve connection. That may be why they just left it off; or, they were tired of the brake light being on. Now, you need to find the wire that connects to the terminal in your second picture.

There should be a wire loom to the left of the radiator behind the bottle on the drivers side that runs along the inner fender this wire tee's into. It runs all the way back to the fire wall. The best I can tell without using a meter, the wire remains white~ish all the way back.

I had plenty of brake issues when I bought my M1009, that's why that wire looked familiar. Notice the shiny new combo valve. Your combo valve is the original OEM one. I replaced the OEM valve on mine while sorting out brake problems.

Not to totally hijack the thread but I have yet to find a decent replacement brass proportioning valve that doesn't leak. Hopefully your luck was better?

Yep, so far so good. However, I did just tighten the plastic connection on the valve for the wire that started this thread a couple weeks ago. At first glance, I thought the radiator was leaking until I took a closer look. The plastic connection was rather loose. I dare not tighten it too much for fear of breaking it. I'll see how it goes, it's not leaking again....yet.
