All,

I thought I'd share my project. I needed a trailer mounted, all in 1 solution that could hold 50-100ft of cable, capable of handling the full output of the MEP-803A. I live in TX, do this is primarily for Hurricanes. Although the only time I've used it is during the recent winter storm. System is currently limited by the 50A RV power inlet that I'm using (which I'm protecting with a 50A backfed bread w/interlock). I got lucky, and I was able to source the cable reel, cable, and a handful of the Powertight connectors for ~$500.

Build list
*Trailer mounted MEP-803A
*Hannay Reel (Sorry, I don't have a model #, I bought this second hand)
*100ft 4gauge (L1, L2, N, G) Type W cable
*Appleton Powertite 4W 4P 6044BC connectors
*Appleton Powertite 4W 4P ADR6044 power inlet
*Charger plug - Graywacke part# GEISLV-SR (tight fit, but it works)

Howdy,
Graywacke part# GEISLV-SR (tight fit, but it works)

That is how the NATO slave port works. The center is sliced into 6-7 pieces which spread open when pushed on.

AWG 4? that was a pretty penny. The Type W in AWG 6 is good to 87 amps. I have a 100ft of Type W AWG 6. :)

They Graywacke part has a solid center, no spreading pins. For $35 or thereabouts, I'm not complaining. I appreciate all the different designs for the NATO plug that they have.

Thankfully I found it on Craigslist, along with the real and 4 of the pin and sleeve connectors for like $500. If I had to pay the full retail price + freight of 4 gauge type W, I'd probably look for something different. It's heavy as he**, but flexible in the cold!

How do you store your 100ft of type W 6 AWG?

eh? Where did you find out about the Graywacke NATO connector? maybe my post. I know how they work. I was advising you how the NATO plug works. They are tight. They are suppose to be.
Pay attention now. ;)

Type W 4C 6 AWG simply coiled up.

Nope, I Googled NATO plugs and stumbled across their website a few months back when I was searching Ebay, CL, Etc. for a used authentic NATO plug, but didn't want to spend $100+.

Nice thread! I never claimed I was unique in coming up with this method :)

I like the idea of the reel. May need to do this on mine.
I like it a lot. I'm really not sure how I would manage the cables otherwise. One thing I may consider adding in the future is a roller element to help manage the cables around the corner of the unit. If possible, it would be ideal if you could find a reel that wouldn't require unloading ALL the cable to hook it up. Not sure if these exist for these kinds of loads?

Just take some dimensions of the plug at the end, and start looking up roller fairleads like on winches. https://www.extremeterrain.com/superwinch-tacoma-terra-45-series-winch-roller-fairlead-87-41340.html?utm_content=AT Winches - Accessories|Superwinch&T5_Var4=TT12347&utm_campaign=XTT+Tacoma+No+Vehicle+High&dialogtech=ppc&utm_source=google-pla&utm_medium=shopping&T5_Var2=shopping&gclsrc=ds&gclsrc=ds

Just make some inquiries to the different manufacturers about dimensions. You can unbolt all the rollers, to fit something much larger through.
Thanks!! Exactly what I was thinking. I'm young guy in my 30's... Man handling that 4 gauge Type W is tough.
