Hey guys, newbie here. I just bought an M1028 and I have some questions. It's missing the transfer case, and I've been looking for a replacement. I have a chance to buy a 243c out of a later model truck, but am unsure if it will work? If it won't work, which is better, a 205 or 208? Also, the transmission cross member and shifter are gone. Where is the best place to buy replacement parts for these trucks? Thanks in advance for any information you could provide me.

Welcome aboard!

Your M1028 more than likely came with an NP208.....

An NP205 is markedly stronger than a NP208, but the ole 208 holds up just fine. It has a 2:62-1 low range which I prefer over the 1:96-1 low in the 205.

Hey, Farmboy! Welcome!

You are doomed, of course. It's got you. o_O

:D

LMC Truck is a good place for parts. Remember though, it's just an 84 Chevy truck. Except for a few military doo-dads, it's pretty much a 1984 K30. Parts is parts. Junkyards are your friends.

I don't know what year you have, but it doesn't matter much. For parts, you have an 84. The Army didn't want the hassle of dealing with model year changes in their supply chain, so they required them all to be built to 84 specs. When you need parts, you want 1984 parts, no matter if your truck was built in 84, 85, or 86.

I have no clue on the transfer case, but I'm sure some of the experts here will comment.

Just some general advice to get you going: If it's rubber, replace it. If it's electrical, clean it.

Check out the Helpful Threads sticky - top of the CUCV forum. It's full of excellent info. You also want to download the TMs (Technical Manuals. Freebies! Very useful. These are the three main ones:

TM9-2320-289-10 - Operators manual for all variants of the CUCV.
TM9-2320-289-20 - Unit maintenance manual for all variants CUCV.
TM9-2320-289-34 - Intermediate support and Direct Support for all variants CUCV.

You'll see these talked about as the "dash ten", the "dash twenty", and the "dash 34".

There are also "dash P" versions, which are the PARTS catalogs to go with each of the TMs. You can look up parts diagrams and the GM part number for each part.

There are a ton more. You'll want to look them over.

I have the transfer case and the crossmember with skid plate. Of course the shipping would be on you. The crossmember and skid plate are easy enough but the transfer case can get costly shipping. I would go with the standard 208C transfer case. Do you have the spacer on back of the transmission? And honestly I would have the transmission and fly wheel flex-plate check closely and replaced while you have it down this far. Good Luck.

How much would you take for the cross member and skid plate? Any idea how much that weighs? I would like to check shipping costs.

Hey, Farmboy, you cut off the end of the QUOTE function. I see this:

If you had the full
"[ / Q U O T E ]"

Then your post would have looked like this:

Aas in post 3: Don't make a move without the pubs. Read the reading. Military CUCVs are not completely identical to their civilian cousins especially in the area of electricals and if yours has a 24 volt charging system which Army radios require.

OK. I need an address. At least a ZIP. And do you have the cast steel adapter between that transmission and transfer case? I can get a shipping quote for the crossmember and skid plate with a ZIP. Do you have both drive shafts? Take Care and Be Safe.

Zip code is 72143. I do not have either drive shaft. Someone stole all of it before I bought the truck. I will attach pics of what the back of the transmission looks like. 20210815_192414.jpg20210815_192423.jpg

You are missing the adapter. And I would just stick with the NP208 transfer case. They hold up well. Most NP205 were used for the PTO capability. I will PM you. I have the adapter also.
