Just a heads up to the do it yourselfers that are building campers if you want to build a colapsable lay flat staircase that doesnt weigh a ton HARBOUR FREIGHT has a set of 1000 lb 84in steel ramps you can cut up for step treads and if you cut them that you keep a 1inch or so tab on each corner to bend around to put a 2in by 10 in piece on each end to either weld to or bolt to then lay your treads out on the floor with 2 sticks of 3/4 or 1in sq tubeing and to make the legs that will let the treads hinge on you can look at my staircase pictures to get it in your head im fixing to get these super heavy treads off mine and replace with these ramps i just stumbled on and they were only 69 bucks IMG_1891.PNG

They were 69 bucks tuesday i guess they were on sale but still you cant touch that price for 10 in deep treads if your trying to buy any kind of steel step tread material usally in 20 ft sralks at the local steel supply you just have to cut the stuff up and finish th ends and save a bunch of money .

Thanks Chucky….. you probably just saved me a ton of money.

Any pictures or videos on the details of your design?

No i havnt tried to make any movies but you just sit down with the stuff i listed and say you want the actual treads to be say 25in long cut the top of the tread laying flat on the table across the 10 in top but dont cut the 2 sides at 25 go an extra inch on all 4 corners and cut them so that you can fold each corner tab around to where its flush under the edge of the 10in tread then you have some thing to weld to or bolt to with the 2x10 filler strip your going to put on each end of tread and once your don building your step treads yo will have to lay the sq tubing out on the ends and start engineering the steps to fold and lay flat on the floor and the sq tubeing will be stacked 2 high on each end of the treads and you will have to figure where to drill thru the tubeing into th 2x10 plate to put 1 bolt on each end of the plate so the stairs can fold ! You will have a top deck tread that stays flat in the slide rack under the truck and the stairs hinging on the bottom of the top deck tread i will take some closer pics next time im outside but the picture i put up top should explain how it works

did it take only two ramps to make one set of stair?
Yes the 84 in ones made 6 treads if your tread needs to be 26in or less when finished ! You will already have 2 ends finished from the 2 ramp ends already having end caps on all other end you have to cut the steps out to where you have about 1 1/2 in on each end to bend around leaving 26in straight , I will draw a picture and post it .

Take a sharpie and lay it out on the metal where to cut so you dont mess up when cutting . Bend the ends around and weld em up for strength and on mine i center drilled at center to center 8 3/4 apart a 3/8 hole in each ear IMG_1914.JPG

No i want the panel to be flat closer to the glass and one piece that compleatly folds over from the roof to where it would rest using the nerf bar across the top of the windshield to hinge on i will post a pic of the bars im thinking aboutIMG_1948.PNG

Like these but a bar going across the top of the windshield tieing into these bars for it to hinge on . And maybe using some pretty thick expanded metal shield so i could see thru it but rocks and such wouldnt bust the glass
