(edit I changed the title from "not a HMMWV but pretty cool)
Well I won a bid tonight on a Scorpion FAV.
The story as my limited research has discovered so far: (so don't pound me on minor errors)
120 of them were designed and built in the early 80s by Chenowth Racing for the military as a response to the failed attempt to rescue the hostages in Iran.

They served in Desert Storm, some were refitted with a third crew member so they could be equipped with a TOW missile launcher. (military doctrine stated that a crew of no less than three could operate a TOW system)
It is also said that less that 20 are believed to exist in private hands at this time.

This one is what I believe to be a huge diamond in the rough, it has been in civy hands since the 90s and is as complete (surprisingly) as anyone could hope for.

I did get to preview and the motor is free, the trans shifts, lubes look pretty good and nothing evil is noticeable.

Comes with 4 original rear tire/wheels and 3 OEM front tires/wheels, and a box of "stuff"

I AM STOKED!!

They served in Desert Storm in the configuration of my Scorpion, with a driver and a gunner, later many were refitted with a third crew member so they could be equipped with a TOW missile launcher. (military doctrine stated that a crew of no less than three could operate a TOW system)

Where did the 3rd guy sit?
The ones I've seen out here had a 3rd seat above the motor.
the guys out here had 3 to 4 frames and one that was pretty much like yours but had the rear seat and all the weapon mounts on it.
very cool. have fun with it.

They mounted the third seat on top of the motor with his feet between the driver/passenger as you describe, the large "desert" air filter system went away to make room, they also refurbished the suspension to handle the added weight.

I guess I can tell this story now. 2 Weeks before Desert Storm kicked off, I got a call at home to "Get your butt in the shop, and bring SFC Mac with you". Click. So I went out and picked up SFC Mac and we drove to the shop. It was on Meisau Kaserne, next to Weilerbach. The largest ammo dump in Western Europe. When we got there, there was a 5 ton long bed with cover on it. MP's and enough rank to command an Army. Mac and I had to swear that we had never seen such a vehicle before, and that we "Know nothink". It seems they had broken a weld on the buggy, in training, and needed to load it up ASAP at Ramstein AFB. I unloaded it with my 7.5 ton mobile crane and we pushed it into the shop. An hour later, we pushed it back out and I loaded it back up. Poof! They were gone. Long after Desert Storm was over, a young Major wearing a green hat, invited my shop and I to go to Baumholder Kaserne to Shoot some exotic weapons for the day. Kinda nice!!

Similar story. A guy that I once worked with shared a story about his having flown C-130's some years ago. The pilot and his neighbor, from on post housing, were always cordial but had never spoken in depth with each other. The pilot found himself landing on an unimproved sandy airstrip somewhere to pick up cargo. Once stopped and with the ramp lowered, a dune buggy drove up into the back. The neighbor dismounted from the buggy, nodded to the pilot who immediately recognized him, and then they both went about their duties without a word being spoken.

The FAV made it home this morning!
Interestingly there were two of these used to patrol the nuclear test site in Nevada they were painted white and the owner told me this morning he bought this one in Nevada and this one is white, more research is needed..
