Montana - has anyone applied for a front license plate exemption?

For those running on Montana plates - has anyone applied for the exemption from front license plate? I am thinking of putting the winch on the front of my M1165A1 and it will be difficult to mount a plate if I do.

If the state that your tags are from doesn't require a front plate then other states have to honor the 1 plate vehicle.

So TN only issues 1 plate. It's on the rear. New York can't make me put another one on the front if it's still registered in TN

Montana is a single tag state. Least it was until 2015 when I moved

Oops, just read it was not your truck.....

Montana is unfortunately a 2-plate state unless you get the exemption, and the truck lives in another 2 plate sTate.

I don't think anyone In NY is going to care honestly. They may care more that it's not a NY Tag and then their questions start. I've never put a tag on the front or rear of any MV I've ever owned and driven for years. Always been in the glovebox. Even before we got the no display law passed in TN.
You may even check with the troopers and see if just doing a tag number stencil on the front bumper like the unit numbers are in place of the tag. Louisiana allows this.

So I don’t mean to be curious BUT, in Montana you don’t have the technology to fasten your plate/tag to your brush guard?

If you can't get away with the exemption, could just zip tie it to the grill so it sits just above the winch once it's installed or at least be easy to relocate. I do the same thing as Simp, plate sits in the glove box.

... or they make brackets that will snap it onto the roller fairlead, and you pull it off when you need the winch. Also there are hinged ones for mounting to fairleads.

Mine is held to the brush guard with steel zip ties. Not the prettiest thing in the world, but it's legal.

I’m with Coug… Zip ties to brush guard. Works great. Why mount anywhere else?

I don't really have a great place to zip tie unless I take off the plate before hitting the trail each time, it's a pain.

Do you have a winch mounted to your truck?
If so, then as I said, they make mounting plates that either fold up when the winch is in use, or clip to the roller fairleads.

Examples here:

If no winch, drill one extra hole in the front bumper plate and bolt your license plate to it (use one of the existing holes for the other side)

Just fasten your plate to two powerful magnets and stick it to the bumper and take it off when you want

Mangle it and throw it under the seat.

If the planets align right and some cop actually stops you, and knows there should be a front plate, show him the plate and mumble something about offroading and intending to put it back on...

I can’t believe we’re having this discussion. It’s just a freakin license plate.

Get a drill. Get a zip tie. Buy a bracket.

Attach to the grill. Attach to the front bumper. Attach to the front fender.

Just wait till you need to navigate the TM’s.

I should add the reason I don’t wants the front plate is it keeps a more military authentic look to the vehicle from the front.

I have my truck in a Montana corporation. Truck has never been to Montana, nor will it LOL!
East coast here, no way the cops would know if Montana is a 1 or 2 plate state off the top of their heads.
