Changed the transmission oil today. I saw a little milky condensation on the dipstick so I moved the transmission service up on the priority list.

Be forewarned: this is a very messy job - no two ways about it.

Be sure you check the oil filter cover and transmission mating surfaces and get all stuck bits of gasket material off.

I’m slowly pumping oil back using a hand pump I picked up at Advance Auto. Can’t be in any kind of a rush here because the fill tube will only allow so much oil through.

Imagine my surprise when I see oil dripping on the ground. Turns out the fill tube clamp bolt at the tranny is loose. Checked fill tube position then Tightened the tube clamp down. Nope. Still leaking.

I ordered a new fill tube seal. This tranny was replaced and that loose bolt leads me to believe that the round rubber sleeve seal isn’t even there or it’s damaged.

Gotta fix it especially since some of the tranny fluid may sit up in the fill tube.

$13 is a bit steep but includes shipping so I can live with that.

what year truck? as in did you swap from engine oil to the Allison recommended trans fluid? or just put engine oil back in?

First; understand that I’m a complete newbie with FMTV’s.

I was telling @Ronmar that since I got the truck the ABS light would periodically come on but if I shut the truck down for a few minutes and started back up it would go off.

I figured I had a fault in the ABS somewhere

For whatever reason, I decided to stop using the engine brake. As soon as I did that - no more ABS light.

RonMar & I discussed the issue and how it could happen but he hasn’t come across it yet.

For giggles I checked the PDP & fuses. The 30 amp CAT ECU fuse has a weak reset spring - the spring barely works. Other than the ABS light no other dash light came on. Since I stopped using the engine brake the ABS has not come back on.

I will engage the engine brake switch again to see if the ABS light comes back on - but I wanted to check around to see who has experienced this before I try the engine brake again.

So, has anyone else found a ABS light come on when the engine brake switch was on? If so, can you explain the reason & correlation?
Update: with the engine brake off the ABS light came on today. Will dig deeper.

Finally got into my OE spare tire lift cylinder. It had locked up just a after I got the truck and would not move. I had replaced it with a commercial cylinder, no internal safety locks, and it wouldn’t quite lower the tire all the way. I had saved the original and got some time to look into it. I removed the fittings and internal check valve parts that would come out and found after that I could move the cylinder. There was a nasty mix of fluids and a bit of water in there. Put it back together and reinstalled on the truck, she’s GTG now. The picture below is of the internal parts.

I guess I should add that the order of parts is the -an *90 fitting, debris screen ( had to pick it out and reshape after) 1/8’ hex set screw (has a hole all the way through for fluid flow) spring, then the check ball, second spring.

One thing I will add is when reassembling the parts don’t screw the set screw all the way down. That check ball has to move both directions.

I was able to put a few hours together to work on big truck. I got the PTO installed on the transmission. It took a bit longer than two hours. I dropped the front driveshaft for clearance, though I’m sure the PTO wouldn’t fit otherwise. Removed the cover plate, used some gasket remover to get the remaining stuck gasket material on the trans. Used a bit of copper spray gasket sealer on the gasket put the location pins in the trans. I needed a bit more height, laying on my back I couldn’t quite reach the PTO pad. Nothing a pallet with a creeper on top couldn’t solve. Put it up there and bolted it on, it really wasn’t too bad. The worst part was reinstalling the PTO control valve screws. Checked trans fluid, looked for leaks, and brought kids for ice cream. No leaks noted. One big step closer to operational winch!

Made a big push yesterday to make progress on this winch install. That PTO is a pain. I made it a bit easier by leveraging my crane. I ran the winch line down from the top and used it to take most of the weight of the PTO and pump sections. I ended up removing the solenoid, and pump to make it fit. I was kind of hoping it could all go in as one unit, but I could not make that work.

I got the pot all sorted, the control valve mounted and all of the hydraulic lines ran. My harness for the winch was damaged so I will have to make a new one up. I bought the Chelsea harness for the PTO solenoid and pressure switch. I just sleeved it in some convoluted split loom and ran it over to the passenger side where it will meet up with the harness coming from the control valve. I'll also be installing a wireless handheld winch control. Should be easy as there are really only 4 wires that make all of it work; one that engages the PTO running to the solenoid, one that lets the truck know the PTO is working coming from the pressure sensor, and finally one each for winch in and winch out that run to the control valve.

Now the next big chunk will be getting the new center dash installed, but I bought a new A/C unit, so I want to at least do the prep for hooking up the A/C while I'm at it. I don't want to have to take out the center dash again. So I'm hoping to get the A/C hoses and wiring sorted while I'm getting the winch panel installed.

I also tried my hand at nickel plating some of the winch rollers. I don't like how they were just painted. the winch line quickly removes the paint letting them get rusty fast. In the pic, the black one has been parkerized and the silver one has been plated with nickel. We'll see how that turns out.
