Very good info, and all the more reason I will never own a computer controlled genset!!! When I really NEED a set to run I want bare bone basics, if there is a problem it is easy to find and repair. My purchases of surplus sets ended with computer controls.

If they see ANY red dye at all in the fuel you are screwed. That includes any transmission fluid. If it is red it is off road fuel to them. I don't really know how they handle used motor oil, technically, you are using it as an on road fuel without paying tax on it so they "could" legally nail...
If you are talking fault codes then you are working with an ECM. And ECM's are basically computers so diagnostics will go beyond multimeters on a lot of stuff. And I was thinking more along the lines of the engines and engine controls since I am a mechanic and not much of an electronics...
Can you even work on these without a diagnostic computer? For that kind of money I will buy a commercial unit that parts are readily available for. I can have a natural gas unit set up for less than 8 grand! Power goes out and genny starts up, I don't even have to go outside.
