6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

Finally got the quote from Fastenal, $205 according to the numbers I used. Once the seller gets the head ready for shipment and I get the final dimensions and weight from the seller I can get an exact price. I just used the the size of the head and 250# (about 65# more than the head itself)

Thanks guys for those numbers! That makes me feel much better! I only sent the request on Saturday so technically they have until tomorrow to reply according to their website and the do-not-reply email. Weight of the head is only 186# (probably bare) so I’m guessing it’ll be fine.

Need to transport from Greenville, NC to somewhere much closer to AZ

Found a head for my engine rebuild, but it’s in NC and I’m in AZ. Need to know if anyone is willing to help out with transportation even if it has to be hand-to-hand once or twice. I’m still waiting to hear back from Fastenal for the shipping quote but I’m willing to bet it’s not going to be cheap.

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

Anyone know of anyone driving east coast to west coast? Might consider using the pony express if I can get here in about a month. Also got a request for a quote going through Fastenal, figure if it’ll be about the same cost as my total gas then I definitely consider it. Too bad Greyhound limits...

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

Sounds good! When I get back from visiting my brother on the 8th-ish, I’ll take a day getting everything ready, and I’ll take the long road trip to the east coast.

Hope you have better luck than me. I didn’t think the head would be toast on mine.

All 5-tons: Heavy Duty Torque Rod Ends

I need to do this myself, just too many other trucks having issues for me to feel comfortable about mine. I just need to deal with my engine first.

It’s been a while since I posted anything in here, sorry about that. I’ve been super focused on my engine rebuild. If you haven’t been following it then check it out (link here), it’s been a real PITA. I have the C channel coped to fit the I beam and ready to be welded, all I have to do is cut...

Adventure Driven's photos and videos of their M1079

I had really hoped to make it to the expo this year but it seemed like my truck had other plans. No matter, I’ll be there next year hopefully.

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

JB, I won’t say you’re crazy - it’s our budgets that dictate everything in life. Getting this truck running again, and in reliable condition, is the top priority for me. I will say though, I’ve got at least two liners that are trashed beyond repair, but your welcome to see if you can repair them...

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

Thanks Will! Soon as I get back home I’ll be sure to check it. I did use the wire wheel on the deck and still didn’t see a crack. Any quick tips for pulling the liners? I’m hoping piece of bar stock cut to size to fit the liner and a slide hammer or a threaded rod to pull it out. About cracks...

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

Trust me, I’ve been thinkin that too. Only two reasons why I haven’t gone that route, 1) replacement head/block could be cracked and I’d lose the money from that, 2) I’d still have to rebuild them anyways before I put it back in the truck. No way I’m going through all this effort and not getting...

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

Hey Will, since this motor is sleeved the things I can think of to cause the block to crack between the cylinders is extreme overheat and frozen coolant/water. Any other known causes? I’m assuming that over boosting the motor would just cause head bolts to stretch/fail and maybe valve...

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

I hope it doesn’t come to me needing to replace the block as well, but if I do thanks for the info. I have an idea for super cheap way for us to mag check our parts, might be able to get away with a little powder. No other option really since I can’t just take the block out to have a local shop...

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

There are no visible cracks between the liners, I checked for that yesterday mornin while I was thinkin of if. Of course, there is no definite answer to that without the tools to mag check the block.

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

I’m curious about the cracks as well, especially since every cylinder has them.

6CTA8.3 engine rebuild for Sur Móvil

Thanks Will, hadn’t thought of that at all but it makes perfect sense. Whatever it was, it looks like there is a piece still stuck in the #3 piston. If I can remove it from the piston we will see what it was for sure. I’ll also compress the springs on those two valves and see if there is...
