I’m still waiting to hear back from the military liaison for Cummins, he said he was reaching out to some people that might be able to help. I called everyone local and the main Cummins office, and a few others, but no one knows what the difference is between the pistons, just that they aren’t...
I just went through the rebuild kit I got, and as I suspected...I have some issues.
#1 - I’m missing the lower engine gasket kit. At a minimum I need the oil pan gasket, accessory gear drive housing gasket, plus what ever else I find along the way that can’t be reused. Besides, I would rather...
A short while after I posted my reply I remembered why I was avoiding buying anything long, because I only have my car to go buy any materials to build whatever. The truck is the only thing I have that I can use to get anything longer than 8’ and it is down for the count right now. Besides, it...
Sorry guys, I missed the email notification for this thread.
Unfortunately, I think I did disable it already unfortunately, but not because of the engine. I think I fried some electronics by accident. I’ve had a golf-cart/forklift style battery connector on the truck for a while that I’ve had...
Does anyone have any ideas for removing the hood in a one-man operation? And no I do not have a forklift, or access to one, otherwise I wouldn’t even be asking this **** question.
Thanks guys, think I’ll be making an adapter to use my crane that is mounted in the bed to lift the head (and maybe the block) out for the rebuild. Unless I find a different spot up front to use, I’m thinking of using the front tow mounts for lifting that head off. Right now the hood is in the...
Does anyone know how heavy the hood assembly is? I have any idea on how to get my head off the engine without hurting myself or anyone else, but I’ll need the hood out of the way to do it.
Lol a steam engine has more torque than this thing does right now lol
simp, although I would love to have the bigger engine for its low end torque I would still far rather have the fuel economy of the 8.3L. Besides I already have the rebuild kit for the 8.3, I just have to go through the kit...
Alternator is for charging 8 210Ah GC2 batteries. Until I fix this engine it’ll get mounted to an extra generator gas engine I have layin about. All will be revealed when I open the engine up, but since this now no longer applies to the title of this thread I’ll post updates under the rebuild...
Definitely possible, but we’ll find out for sure when I open it up.
Any chance you have an alternator? That’s what I’m really after
No rush right now, the generator works but I want to replace it with the newer alternator since I’ve heard many stories about the gen failing and burning out...

Smells like raw fuel and motor oil 74. Already called a local shop and they want $480 + $parts to rebuild the head while I focus on the block. I might still get that compression tester since it’ll be a little bit until I can start on the rebuild.
Good news and bad, think I just now finally figured out the issue I’ve had with my trucks engine. I’ve had a miss on 1-2 cylinders for a while now. I had the truck runnin to charge up the batteries for the house since I just changed them to 24V and something caught my eye (in the dark no less)...
So much for an easy fix, swapped the injectors and I still have 2 dead cylinders at #5 & #6. Called a “local” shop and they want $350 to just flow test the pump. Fuel flow appears to be the same between all the cylinders when I cracked them loose. I did hear an intake valve stick a couple time...
It’s me! I have absolute sh1t for luck lol
nah, it ran great when I first got it, minus a lack of power due to the gov springs never being adjusted. Hindsight, I shoulda left them alone and I’d still have all my tires lol
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I think I figured it out. While I was going through all the rocker assemblies, checking them and doing the lash, I had the #5 injector soaking in some gasoline.
Looks like it got thoroughly cooked, crispy fried even, when the pivot shaft and exhaust...
Also another thing that I’ve noticed that I forgot to mention. I’m not sure if it is related to the excess fuel screw I turned up, but it does seem to run rich. Not so much by smell of the exhaust, though it does smell like some unburnt fuel is there, noticeable more by throttle response. I’m...
At a stopping point right now since I can’t seem to find my feeler gauges. I have fuel flow on all cylinders from the pump, not sure if they are at the correct pressure but for the moment I’ll assume that they are. When I cracked the fuel lines, #3 acted normal but #5 and #6 didn’t. #5 did take...
