Useful for repossession for sure!
Being a wrecker though, I can't help but feel it isn't completely a "gun truck" without towing a big gun behind it. Like a Long Tom!
The AAA RV level membership should be able to cover towing. After all, many Class A RVs are as heavy as our trucks are!
There are RV-specific outfits like CoachNet and Good Sam that specialize in roadside assistance for RVs. I'm wondering if they'd consider an old military truck for membership...
I borrowed my father-in-law's DeWalt 1/2" cordless impact and it couldn't bust the nuts loose at all. The torque multiplier and drill adapter I made gently eased them off yet not at a snail's pace. Electric-powered torque multipliers exist, but they seem to be for structural steel applications...
I second this. My dad has had two different trucks (a WW2 jeep, halftrack) where the shifting problem was within or near the shift tower. All the repairs were made with the transmission in the truck. Sounds like a good place to check the tranny issues first.
I don't think I'd offer more than $3000 for the truck. Based on your description, it sounds like it needs:
Tires - will run you at least $1000 whether you go super singles or duals.
Brake work - probably needs a brake system flush with the proper fluid. Who knows what's wrong exactly? Could...
I got the rim on the bench in the shop. It's a heavy sucker! I'm guessing the big part of the rim weighs around 70 lbs, and the beadlock flange that bolts to the rim weighs around 30 lbs. I got it on the bench and chased the threads on the rim studs with a die. The threads were pretty...
I'm in the midst of swapping the old 365/80R20s on my M35A3 to some pre-loved 395/85R20s. This swap has successful results documented throughout the Steel Soldiers forums, so I decided to take the plunge. I would've liked to stick with 365s because I like the look of them, but I was able to...
I might see if I can get a set for my pre-loved 395s. Although I'm a little concerned about them trapping moisture. Then again I see campers and RVs have them on all the time, so I guess that's not an issue?
And what if you get that deuce stuck? Bobbed, the truck probably still weighs about 10000 lbs, and you'll still need someone to help you get unstuck. A modern pickup weighs about half that and can do what you want it to even better and with more comfort!
My opinion: get a decent used modern...
Thanks for posting! If I remember correctly, I think some parts vendors are selling copper brake line kits for the old Jeeps. I think my dad bought a set for his M38A1.
That said, every time I go under the truck to bleed the air tanks, I visually check for any brake fluid leaks around the...
Erik doesn't have the nuts in right now. Oshkosh and Big Mike's has them, though shipping is expensive - maybe I can ask them to use a USPS flat rate box instead. Memphis Equipment has rim nuts that will fit 5/8" studs for the M939A2, which confuses me because I thought that was exclusively an...
I wrecked the original two-piece rim lock nuts off my M35A3 rim (tip - don't run a tap all the way through the lock nuts  Yeah not happy with myself!). I know they're the same lock nuts that came on the M939A2 rims, so I was wondering where the 5-ton folks are getting their replacements...
I have a little update to share with my project - I managed to pull the bead lock insert out of the old tire with a floor jack, chain, two 3.5 ft pry bars, and a 4x4 wood block. I probably didn't even need the floor jack, or could've substituted it with another pry bar. I'll make a video when...
Amazing what lighting does for colors. Years ago my dad bought a CJ-5 at night that looked candy apple red in a garage. Next morning in the sunlight it turned out it was actually orange!
