I measured the original safety wire that came out of the rear differential assembly (bearing caps and ring gear nuts), and it came out to be 0.062".
Here's a cross reference from the TM for bathroom reading where I verified the wire I purchased as sufficient.
1. Open TM TM9-2320-361-34 and flip...
Finished the rear locker install today! Manhandled the rear differential into the axle housing with a new gasket and some Permatex 81182 (Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker) lightly smeared on both sides of the new gasket. Oddly enough Section 10-3 of TM 9-2320-361-34 (page 10-5) doesn't mention a...
See Step #27 above. Below you will find discussion & pictures regarding the safety wire (and alternative) for finishing the rear locker install.
I decided against safety wire on the ring gear nuts due to internal clearance issues with the differential housing. Any place that I tried to tuck...
Thanks.
I have no clue how much a shop would charge to do this work. Your average 4x4 shop may or may not have the tools to pull the center chunk out of a Rockwell axle. I didn't really keep track of my hours so I can't even help you to figure out a labor total for a shop rate. If you...
No problem. I'm glad I figured it all out by deciphering the TM's. Maybe somebody will get some good information out of this thread if they decide on using an Ouverson locker for their M35A2.
Who says it's my hand in the girly men gloves? lol
:3dAngus:
19) Remove the bolt/nut/fender washers from inside the Ouverson Locker.
20) Reinstall the differential assembly into its housing. Verify your alignment marks! Everything goes back where it came from. Make sure to slide on the corresponding bearing retainer on the appropriate bearing...
15) Unbox the Ouverson Locker. Be amazed at what you are holding in your hands. Give yourself time to recover from the excitement. We don't need trembling hands here.
16) Place the locker into either carrier case half. I'm left handed so I chose the left side carrier case half. Don't judge...
6) Turn the differential housing upside down so that the bull gear is facing up. This makes it easier to work on.
7) Take your favorite hammer and a center punch or some sort of scribe to mark each side of the differential. I chose to mark a single dot on the left side and (2) dots on the...
I have a build thread with all of my modifications in it, but this breakout thread will be for those that don't normally read my build thread. It will help anyone trying to search for the necessary reading material so that they too can install an Ouverson Locker in any of their Rockwell axles...
Here's a quick (vertical!) video where I'm checking the gear mesh alignment before tightening down the side adjusting nuts. I didn't change any of the gears so I just slowly turned each side adjustment nut until the differential assembly was centered on the wear marks of the bottom (bevel)...
Even more installation of the rear locker. Still waiting on safety wire and gaskets.
Notes on the pictures:
- Working on the Rockwell axle is like working on an old tractor = easy.
- I apologize in advance for any millwrights that view these pictures. Harbor freight cheap dial indicator and...
More pics from the rear locker install.
Notes on the pictures:
- I deburred the inside of each carrier half.
- I had to borrow my buddy's vice to torque the carrier bolts.
- I used 3 torque passes for the carrier bolts (60, 105, 150 ft-lb).
- The locker is from Ouverson Engineering & Machine...
Okay, I finally got time away from work to tear apart the 3rd member of the rear axle. The pictures pretty much speak for themselves. Kaboom! I'm surprised the cross made it.
Notes on the pictures:
- I used TM9-2320-361-34 (sections 10-3 & 10-4). Find the TM here
- Make sure to make...
Thanks to juanprado for letting me ride with him in his HMMWV tomorrow in the parade. My bobbed deuce is still waiting for the Ouverson rear locker to arrive before she gets back on the road.
I can only speak for the air shift transfer case. The speedometer cable screws into an adapter fitting in the middle of the transfer case below the driveshaft that comes from the transmission, but above the driveshaft that is connected to the front axle. There really isn't any way of plugging...
Can't help you at the moment to diagnose the problems, but if you ever do get an air shift transfer case I'll help you put it in. No sweat. I've pulled mine twice. I'm in Prairieville.
So it turns out I didn't snap either one of the rear axle shafts. I drained a bit of water and milk chocolate oil out of the rear diff housing. There were a few small pieces of metal attached to the magnet in the drain plug. A buddy of mine helped me remove the rear axle 3rd member by running...
1. Visit http://www.allisontransmission.com/sales-service-locator
2. Choose "United States" and "Hinckley" and "OH".
3. Choose "Express Lube" and a 50 mile radius.
4. Change your search terms for more results (i.e. 100 mile radius, etc).
Good luck!
Hardest part of the Hydroboost conversion was working under the dash. I'm not a fat man, but I could see it being a problem to those "gravitationally challenged" steel soldier members. Don't forget that you have to get the brake pedal arm double bent to get closer to the accelerator pedal...
