In November, GovPlanet had 4 Avtron LSH100 load banks come up at the Butner NC site. Three looked like they had never been used and the OD one looked slightly used. I was interested because how many folks really need a load bank, right? Prices ranged from $4k-$3k, before taxes and fees...gulp.
Sorry about the quote with nothing else. I was on an iPad yesterday and the whole first post popped up as a quote and I could not delete it until I was on the desktop.
If you have never run MEP gensets, they start differently than anything I have ever run. Without that solenoid, this advice will not apply but will when you get one installed. Once a normal 002 or 003 starts, you must hold the switch in start until the field is flashed and the oil safety is...
It says there were 43 bids so at least one other person also wanted it. Hertz, what is a hertz? That one has 400 so that is waaaaaay better than only 60. Kind of like three phase only may be an important factor in a purchase.
You just have to keep at it. Obviously, remove the plastic handle and I think there is a short pin underneath that helps the purchase . I grabbed it with a small pair of needle nosed Vise Grips and kept wiggling. I did loosen the bolts holding it together so the lubricant had a chance to...
Do you have any techniques to pass along on assembling that switch in post #11? I have only fixed a four level switch and that was after a bunch of yelling and throwing things! I still have another four stack switch in a jar in pieces that I gave up on. I even tried fixing pieces in place...
Throttle body spray cleaner melts the fuel residue off the screens in the pumps without damage. It will also do a good job on the tank but you will need to get it loose so you can move it around for cleaning. While cleaning the tank, you will get enough to slosh around so you can dump the...
When you say ECU, is that a heat pump? I have several FDECU-5 heat pumps ( Field deployable environmental control units) that I run from my MEP-804a&b gensets. It is a 5 ton heatpump needing 60 amps per phase at 208v Three phase 60 hz. It will show a short about 75% of the time due to the...
If you get a MEP 802, make sure the exhaust flap on top is present. No flap is almost always a precursor for large problems due to rainwater getting inside the engine And sitting for who knows how long.
If you have never run one of these, make sure to follow the starting instructions EXACTLY (should be under the flip up cover over the controls). You have to hold the switch in start longer than you are probably used to and it won’t hurt anything. Look up threads about putting a unit in...
I scanned this thread and saw in post #46 that you have run this set some. DO NOT EVER idle this genset, you will ruin it. Once you get it adjusted for 60 hz, leave it alone and just switch the set off without touching the throttle. I did not understand this at first on mine but my luck...
The electrical connection Switch (don’t know the official name) on MEPs are basically an electrical contactor so you don’t require an additional breaker for your three phase needs.
In the original post, did I understand that the goal was to start and run a MEP genset without batteries installed? Something in the back of my mind thinks that may be bad. Am I wrong?

To the point about waste in the military, while instructing at pilot training at the end of my time, one instructor who flew KC135s said he knew for a fact that he had personally dumped over 1 million pounds of fuel into the atmosphere Over his career.
If you end up looking for a MEP 804 series...
If you are new to MEP generators, these start different than any thing else I have ever run. Make sure to hold the start switch in crank for several seconds after it starts, it will not hurt anything.. On my 804s, the instructions under the flip up lid says hold till at least 25 psi oil...
