    M1088 camper conversion

Going instead with epoxy instead of powder coat and I even have it scheduled with a vendor for blasting and painting- Sept 8 delivery and disassembly on site, pick up over the weekend. It will be a lot of work between now and then but it's a huge milestone. When it comes back, the shelling...

    M1088 camper conversion

Thanks Chris. It's been an incredibly fun and rewarding process so far. I have truly enjoyed it. That said, I can't wait to get it camp-able and go use it! Answers: 1 - The first set of rails serves as an adapter between the OEM 1088 chassis and whatever I was building, and also as the lower...

    gmc ovrelander

Great looking set up and glad to hear it's your ideal rig. I also had a Bigfoot (10.5', similar vintage) and loved it, but... It didn't have the storage I wanted. Even with bags, it was pushing the capacity of my diesel F350 dually. Unfortunately, the camper didn't stand up to the roads I...

    LMTV rocker switches

Generic units are available, search for 44mm x 22mm switches. I have a post in my build thread on what I found: https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/m1088-camper-conversion.193622/page-4#post-2308321

Bought new LED Head Lights to put on?

Doug, I can't tell by looking at the picture, but if you look closely at the front lens, you should be able to see very fine wires (like a rear window defroster) applied to it. The heating is done by current flowed through the wire matrix just like the rear window version. The wires are...

What have you done to your FMTV or LMTV today

Another thing I checked was wheel component run out. On the two worst wheel assemblies I had, they were up to 1/8" out of round. I know that doesn't sound like a lot but by swapping wheel "faces" and "bells" (not sure of the correct technical name), I was able to get them all fairly...

WHO' S A FULL TIME LMTV OVERLANDER, ANY OUT THERE?

Based on the above, a good rule looks to be stay under 26k GVW and you'll be fine. That's been one of my no-compromise build constraints.

    A0 vs A1 Air/Hydraulic Pump

As long as it's not a metal-on-metal or violent sounding hammering noise, yes, it's normal. That's the pneumatic portion in operation and completely normal. If that doesn't give you the warm fuzzies, post a video of it- or just the sound track- and I bet someone here would be able to confirm...

    M1088 camper conversion

Some good work was done this weekend, starting with another do-over. The cargo bay doors were aesthetically pleasing but the hinges flexed too much and I lost the floor space in the bay which the hinges occupy. Time to design something else to get that space back and reliably locate the doors...

    Big, Scary Truck

I was thinking the same thing- and I live just outside of Portland. The OR DMV is almost a bipolar place. I registered a stage rally car (1979 RX-7 with a bridgeported 13B wearing a 48mm twin choke Weber and a 4" cat-free exhaust)- no problems, in and out in minutes. I went to register the...

    M1088 camper conversion

Thanks Chucky. It was there when we moved in, but I did bump the top up 3' when we bought our first boat. Well worth paying someone to do that. I am SO glad to have it! One more pic which I neglected to include in the above post- one of the pedestal area once the box has been set back down...

    M1088 camper conversion

Thanks Doug. I did see a sticker with ABS written on it but I thought I read somewhere it was for the trans. Regardless, it's not going anywhere now!

    M1088 camper conversion

A pair jack stands at the back and a pair of high-lift jacks used carefully with some tubing attached to the structure at the front. There's a pic at the top of the post above: The tubing slides over the tower for the jack and with care, can be used to get the job done.

    M1088 camper conversion

Reassembly also went well: Then I realized I had forgotten to fab up the pedestal for the TCM (at least what I think is the TCM). It would be quite foolish not to remove it again and do that seeing as I had everything set up and ready to go. So I did it. Fabbed up a perch, which looked...

    M1088 camper conversion

The separation went incredibly well: So I went off capping and grinding everything which I could find. I also finished a few welds on the underside which were inaccessible from the top: The box is ready to go back on at this point (I think) but I have a few leftover things to affix to the...

^ This is my plan for when I cross that bridge. Still a few pages back on the to-do list though.

    M1088 camper conversion

Thanks Chucky. I was thinking about that too but there is potential for a tow point to be constructed at the end of the chassis, slightly below the cargo bay elevation, without effecting ground clearance and departure angle and still letting a tow rope swing without loading the box. I will...

    What is it?

Wandering off topic here but respectfully, please take a moment to understand that why the grid failed had nothing to do with the manner in which power was generated but how the generation stations were managed and maintained...

    M1088 camper conversion

The water capacity/capability is something I continue to mull over but I do need to start narrowing down the possibilities here soon. I like the reclaim idea but wonder if it's worth the effort. Conversely, if I was already thinking about a filtration system to draw in outside water, it...
