Determine if it is engine oil or transmission fluid. Both coolers are in the radiator. There are dyes you can put in the oil and see under UV light, just put in the engine oil and then put fresh water in and see if the dye shows up with new oil. With clean water you sometimes can see the red...

You jumped in on a 7 year old post with a question that leaves a lot more questions. Do you have a M37? You removed an axle from a M37? Sounds like you have a deuce and you would have much better luck in that forum if I am correct. If you removed an axle from a 6x6 Dodge scout car I can only ask...
Loosen the head nuts and then turn it over slowly and see if the which head, if either, lifts up at the interference point. If they do not lift up it may not be a piston to head issue. If one lifts up at least you know where to go.
