Wow. What a beautiful truck. If I owned that I would hate to even drive it in the dirt. I would prefer a restored truck like that to be as original as possible but I'm sure any of your modifications could be converted back. It's your truck to enjoy and you have a nice one.
Keep trying that key in the ignition. If the keys aren't cut perfectly or they are worn out, the ignition switch doesn't like them. I'll bet it will work eventually with some fiddling.
I'm pretty sure that when the wrecker pto is engaged that the transmission automatically shifts to direct or 5th gear when the air pressure is adequate.
