    Humorous drain plug sizing

I see the parts stores think highly of those pumps from $180 rebuilt to about $280 new. Makes me even more anxious to start the project...lol

    Humorous drain plug sizing

The belt is really loose... probably an inch of movement. It stays on & the engine does not run hot, but it is definitely not right. My biggest fear is the lower bolt that is very hard to turn... if it breaks, that could turn into a major project.

    Humorous drain plug sizing

The things you find amusing while being frustrated. My other is there are a ton of bolts holding the water pump in. The lower one feels like it is going to break off. I can loosen them enough that antifreeze squirts everywhere, but the pump will still not rotate to tension the belt. I know this...

    Humorous drain plug sizing

Has anyone noticed how the radiator drain is so small? It takes forever to drain 8 gallons of coolant out of a 1/4" hole. Pulling the lower hose did not look like a fun adventure... Took me all day to flush the system a few times to get it clean, even while using the second drain plug on the...

    16.00 tire life

I thought about that yesterday. The engineer in me gets some crazy ideas sometime, but never got the opportunity to try out. I'll give it a shot & let you know.

    16.00 tire life

Yes I am, but in the 809 series 5 tons they are full time 6x6 unless you remove a driveshaft.

    16.00 tire life

I heard about removing the front shaft & I was also reading in the one of the Deuce sections about doing lockout hubs (or pulling an axle shaft) on 1 rear axle. Seems a little drastic, but I'm sure it helps. Funny thing is my front tires do not appear to be getting tore up. I figured the fronts...

    16.00 tire life

I have 55 front & it seems good. Any scuff marks on the front tread look even for the most part. Wonder if a set of shocks in the rear would dampen the pivoting of the rear suspension. Seems like bumps cause articulation between the 2 axles which does not cancel out quickly. I can see this in...

    16.00 tire life

Just an update.... took the pressure down to 35 & it definitely rides nicer. What I don't like is how it is now grinding the corners off the rear tires from turning. Seems like the mid axle is the worst. The outer lugs are taking a beating... the insides & the fronts are sharp & square. Took...

    Stuck throttle

Mine was stuck at part throttle fortunately, having one stick at wide open would cause a few tense moments. Steering column locks are good for anti-theft, but not so much for turning the engine off while moving. They aren't supposed to go to the lock position unless in park, but I have heard of...

M818 Guess I should update my signature...

    Stuck throttle

Pucker factor was not that bad, I was more concerned that something was happening to the engine. Was less than 2 miles of deserted backroads to my house. It wasn't like it was out of control... it has a clutch, brakes & a governor to control it. 45mph is still much slower than everyone else...

    Stuck throttle

Had a little excitement today. Took the truck for a ride & noticed when I went to shift, the rpm hung as I pushed the clutch in. Thought it was odd, but rolled into the next gear & it did the same. Figured I better turn around & go back home. As I pulled onto a side road to turn around I saw...

    M818 Hemmit tire Speedo adapter???

I've been searching everywhere... does anyone have a source for the correct 5 ton speedometer adapter for the 16.00's. I think a different 90deg adapter would be preferable over a second adapter added to the whole assembly. Currently have the factory adapter for 11.00 tires installed.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Did a coolant flush today. Drained, refilled & ran it till hot, repeated this 4 times until it was clear. Those little drain petcocks should be larger considering they have to drain 8 gallons of fluid.

    16.00 tire life

Good to hear. Didn't have it out on the road again, so I did not experiment with other pressures. I'll give it a shot & see what happens. Its hard to believe how much air they hold. Takes 30 seconds to bleed off 2lb.

    Insurance on a 5 ton

If using this as recreation only... I just got mine through State Farm on an antique/classic policy. It was only $68/yr. for full coverage.

    16.00 tire life

I am still tying to find the sweet spot for pressure. With the M818, when empty, there is no weight in the back. On rough surfaces, I get a bounce from it, since the suspension does not move, the tires become the only suspension. I was told to run in the 30's rear & 50-60 front. Currently I...

    16.00 tire life

Thanks for the info... I was wondering as commercial tires are good for over 100K, but since these are an off road design, I did not know if it was 10K or 100K. No idea how to gauge it. I do notice the scuff marks from turning enough to make me concerned. For those with 16.00's what pressure...

    16.00 tire life

Does anyone have an idea how many miles a 16.00 is good for? I did not know how long these last. Primary road use unloaded... Thanks in advance.
