Greetings!
Sorry for the delay checking in. Had some computer issues, and once they were were resolved, was badly behind on work. So....how can I help?
The largest collection of material I have seen on trucks of this era were previously housed in the Ordnance library at Aberdeen (NOT the...
Must have been a clone - unfortunately I was in Tennessee (where you last saw me!). The Jim Thorpe show is a GREAT show, and I wish I could have been there.
I will, however, be at the MTA show in Sussex next month (April 16-17). That said, by the time I get to Sussex I'll have been on the...
Hopkinsville is relatively close to Fort Campbell, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is where your vehicle is.
Hope this helps,

While not addressing the drum capacity, TM 9-8617 "Winches, Power-Takeoffs, Power-Divider and Hydraulic Equipment - Gar Wood" is an extremely useful manual for all things winch on the G-742, G-744 and G-749 trucks.

Close to what I was thinking - chain up the high side rear axle, pull the tire/wheel assembly, mount a wheel sans tire and use it as a winch drum for rear recovery.
Best,
David
Though not this winter, and not in the northeast, I've spent some time on snow and ice while behind the wheel of a deuce....some cargo trucks, some heavier variants, some very heavy.
Stopping is a much bigger deal than going - and for that, chains (in my experience) are the only way to go...
I'd have to dig through several boxes of manuals to confirm this, but my recollection is that they do NOT interchange.
I'll try to confirm this over the next day or so.
Hope this helps,

The entire G-742 series of trucks (i.e. - M35-style) were designed as replacements for the WWII-era CCKW, drawing on lessons learned from those vehicles as well as advances in automotive engineering and the quest for standardization. At the outset of WWII, automotive specialists with the...
Thanks - have amended post accordingly - and you are correct, gas. I've accumulated 4 used ones, all of which leak!

Denise and I will be there, inside one of the buildings (don't remember which one) surrounded by books (with a little luck we'll have our M123A1C/XM746 book there, in addition to the current titles). I'll be looking for a NOS 5-ton gas (real gas, for a M62) tank and a Zenith 11362 carb or kit...
While I have no first-hand experience with such conversions, considering the woes that the army had with full-length dump beds on the CCKW, I'd be cautious. In fact, when the army first wanted a dump on the G-742 chassis, they opted for one 3-feet shorter to prevent overloading. The shorter...

Yes, it was painful writing books like my "Dodge" and "Big Mack" book that came out last year and my "Dragon Wagon Part 2" which covers the M123-series (and will be released later this year), when I've not been able to drive mine in years! But Monday will see some much needed wrench time...
Hi Guys,
Many of you have been asking me (for 4-5 years!) to let it be known when my book on Vietnam Gun Trucks is available. Well, I am pleased to say that time is NOW, the Gun Truck books have arrived!
Primarily in color, several never previously published photos of Deuces, 5-tons, Dodges...
