    Manafacturer Needed

Indeed, all the Studes I've examined have a SN beginning with M, followed by five numerals. (incidentally, so do the C-W, U-B, and S-P i.e. all the South Bend-built trucks prior to Kaiser-Jeep.) All the Reo (and Lansing Division of White; i.e., all the Lansing-built trucks) I've examined have...

    Zenith Mechanovac Governor

Jon, Do you have a TM9-1819B (not 1819A)? From memory, this is the book that covers this. I loaned mine out a few years ago and haven't seen it since - so I can't check my memory for you. Best wishes, David

    Manafacturer Needed

The army purchased hundreds, if not thousands, or replacement data plates from Reo. Through the years, they have been applied rather broadly to trucks of all makes. So, just cause the plate says Reo doesn't mean it IS a Reo - in fact, in my estimation there exists today more faux Reos than...

Sorry to say I will miss both of those - I'm "on the road again...."

The real giveaway is the 1970 date of manufacture, which matches with the registration number and serial number. AM General didn't exist until March 1971. DD

    Manafacturer Needed

The truck in question was built by Kaiser-Jeep. IF a truck had its originally factory-installed engine it might be possible to correlate that to the truck manufacturer - but relatively few of these trucks have their original engines. HTH, David Doyle

    Verifying actual engine

What side of the truck is the starter on? LDS would be on the driver's side - don't think it will fit in a deuce that way. The army ran out of replacement LDT's and used LDS's in their place, with the pump settings changed, oil pan reversed, dipstick moved, bellhousing changed, etc...

    Deuce manufacturers

Ya'll left out the Lansing Division of White, and Studebaker-Packard, off the top of my head. And, although a hard drive crash earlier this year cost me much of my data base (I've been months putting it back together), I believe that there are data plate both reading "Utica-Bend Division of...

David Doyle - New Editor of Supply Line !

Thanks for the kind remarks guys. This year, so far, has been full of work and changes in my life which has precluded my participating here at Steel Soldiers like I would have liked to have. Things do seem to be settling out, and by the time Aberdeen rolls around I should be a regular here once...

Help Figuring out what kind of truck I have

Looking at the photos I can provide you with only a few bits of information - and some questions. First, the truck is definately on a M44A1 or M45A1 chassis. If it had been built as a military fire truck (class 530B), there would be tell-tale holes in the windshield frame where spotlights...

    Insurance ???????

Correct - there are some mistakes in this book that I was not allowed to correct - and this is one of them. DD

1965 deuce only 6x6 in first gear?

Is your truck a M621? If so, the front axles are engage via an air switch beneath the dashboard. I believe it is the center of the three switches - the switch on the right locks the rear differentials, and the one on the left locks the front differential. The lever in the floor only controls...

    Disaster In Hooks

And what are you going to complain about? Not to be a jerk - but you just said that the truck was in great shape. You also said it started and ran well enough you were going to drive it home. I really hate to hear of the bad luck that you had, but these are the perils of buying surplus...

    Identify This Firetruck!

Nah, that baby's got a stump pullin' R6602.

Vietnam Painted Vehicles needed in MI!!!!!!

I've been there several times in the past. At those time vehicles of several eras were displayed (as were aircraft), but only period-correct vehciles participated in the living history portion of the event. Even if you only go as a spectator, it is still very worthwhile.

    Gazing into a crystal ball.........

As Michael pointed out earlier - that has nothing to do with the point I was trying to make. What I am trying to say is that TODAY there are deuces being sold by GL that are essentially unmolested from the day they left the factory. In thirty years (when I hope a number of us on this forum are...

    Gazing into a crystal ball.........

Michael, You hit the nail on the head!!! As for the matching motor and frame numbers - I believe there is such a thing - and I am hard on the hunt to prove (or disprove) this. DD

    Gazing into a crystal ball.........

Nah - just think when buying, or before starting modding a rare truck - be that an all original "common" M35A2 or a "scarce" M48. Both in fact are scarce. Lots of trucks have been repowered by the military already - just like lots of WWII Jeeps were repowered by the military - but the ones that...
