Latest update. I have the entire inside surface of the fiberglass cargo roof sanded. I hand sanded the entire surface and went over it a second time just to be sure it was smooth. Next is to get it sprayed on the inside then flip it back over and sand the outside. I hope to get that done very...
Yesterday after an 8-hour day at the FT job I came home and my Son made a gallant attempt to get started on the M1009 project. It was going well for about an hour and then the lights went out. Not the lights in the shop the lights in the sky. It was dark and windy and started monsoon raining. I...
Tonight, after working 10 hours, like most Thursday nights I was out to eat supper. I had a brainstorming with my friend about placing/setting the rear roof on and doing the overall paint job and the 3-color woodland camouflage and then removing the roof again to install the weatherstrips. I...
Last night I spent about 4 hours cleaning the old contact cement out of the front roof seal area. That old stuff is tough and requires patience to get it out and the seal area clean. I used a dull razor blade, a flat screwdriver, hook pick and an awl to get the area clean as possible. I followed...
The owner has been sending me parts to add and replace things that are missing. He did send me a correct brush guard. I have the correct bumpers. A few of the smalls I am missing. I need the rear bumper outer braces. Both front and rear bumper are missing the outer braces. The bolts are in the...
Now for some of the HORROR. Not sure what was going on here. This is the way the headlamp harness was under the hood. Explains why the headlamps are not working. Batteries are for a lawn tractor. Pil cooler lines are hacked and cut, they are hose clamped together. The new radiator is flopping...
I didn't give it the name or buy the vehicle. I have been tasked with bringing this M1009 back to operational condition and doing some of the Voodoo work I usually don't get involved in. But I will do it for others. Right up front before it even came here, I knew it had some hacking done to...
This was a 1976 Chev 5/4 ton truck after we finished dropping it out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft. It was full of SA ammo(7.62mm) that scattered and had to be reboxed
I used them in the past to install roof racks on GM vehicles back in the 70's and 80's. I am not sure they would have the grip range and strength to take a tight bolt. May be worth a try provided i must not buy 25 of them to find out. Thank you for the tip. I see they are sold in packs of 1...
I think there are 4-6 bolts holding the cowl screen in place. The washer nozzles come off with the screen. Be careful. The wipers are a piece of cake with the right tool.
I was down in my barn working on my M1009 rear cargo cover roof. I was able to remove all the seals and weatherstrips without a huge problem. That was easy. Putting them back on is never as easy. I fished the plate out that the threads are in to hold the rear roof down. I don't know if I can...
Last night I had the help to bring the roof inside and flip it over. I am a bit puzzled. The rear nuts that screw into the corners of the rear corners are non-existent. I did not remove bolts from the rear corners and that may explain why they were not there. Anyone ever encounter that? These...
If it were mine, I would pull the front axles and closely check the outer axle U joints. They look a little rough. And if I went that far I would replace the ball joints. Just an idea. Take Care. The upper and lower ball joints on the m1009 have no grease fittings from new. Replacement parts may...
@cucvrus what do you think about these?
I think it is a lot of money for 2 stamped tin pieces. There is nothing special about a valve cover. If they no holes in them and are 6.2 valve covers, they are good to go. Used or new makes no difference. That is a lot of coin for 2 pieces of tin...
Basically, straightening bout any divots, dents, stretched areas on the tin valve covers that may be misshapen from use and being overtightened.
I use a body hammer and a straight edge to peen the covers back in shape.
On another note, I use the Fel Pro valve cover gaskets and the Right...
I did want to mention that CARC paint is being sold on Ebay. 2 gallons of paint and 1 gallon of catalyst that makes 3 gallons of useable paint maybe 3.5 when water is added. The cost is $1000. The paint cost me $399. per gallon and the catalyst was $199. It is my opinion that you get what you...
This is just an old CUCV hood I had laying around. I painted it with the CARC paint that was left over from painting my M1009 tub inside. I am going to hang this one over the wood stove upside down as a heat shield. This is the wood stove in my shop/barn. I want to do the 3-color camouflage...
