LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

On a tangent, I am glad I left the M1082 in PHX. One of the points of this trip was to bring a load of cargo back to PHX and I could have gotten it all with one trip using the trailer, but I thought eh, maybe not so much since since it was new to me.

    Working on the M1078 LMTV

I get a spread of difficulty for just overnight in the cold. But when I let the truck sit for days or even weeks it starts right up. My record is not driving it for 4 months, and it started right up first try. "bad" for me is 2 or 3 attempts for 5 seconds before at least some of it catches and...

That's fair. And I do appreciate everyone's feedback. You're right about the cooling system holding working pressure - I did not communicate clearly I meant is that it it was clearly OVER pressure. Steam was blowing out of coolant lines, the screw fittings, everything. It looked like a cartoon...

    Working on the M1078 LMTV

I have never figured out the rhyme or reason to this. The other night at -7 it started right up first try in the morning like it had been 65 degrees. The next night at 27 it took a couple of 3-4 runs at the starter button. Shrug. It almost always starts up first time for me, just every now and...

LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

I don't think that coolant boiling and blowing steam through water pump seals because the alternator dropped the water pump belt when it broke off is "unrelated". People seem to be saying that and I don't know why. The engine is designed to hold a hot fluid, not high pressure steam. It was...

Ugh. We got Walshed man. I was up on the 50 and from where I was it looked good, and I recall foolishly celebrating along with everyone else in that section. The only thing that makes this feel better is the Panthers lost so it "didn't matter" but still. To everyone going on about the...

LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

No, I didn't, not in the state it was in (even before these problems). I feel like that thread got out of control. I also wouldn't have taken a trip without a sure way to recover it, either a commercial service or more likely going with a pack of vehicles, which is what I was always...

LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

Big day yesterday! So ran into overtime on Friday but they got me out the door. We did go with a 8" SAE bolt that was kind of close and they managed to get the bolts out, although I think one of them is M10 now :) They loc-tited everything and I got on the road about 7. I thought for sure it...

Yeah I already figured so. I am just trying to get through one problem at a time haha.

Thanks. I really just need an end cap.

LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

Judging by the fact they are welding I don't think the bolts just backed right out. Got a couple of hours here before I hit O/T. Looks like I am going to need a ujoint in the very near term though. R279X seems to be the deal, anyone get these through normal places like NAPA or is it some bizarre...

Not mine. It blew a seal a few days before I was supposed to take this trip so I capped the lines. I do have a spare power pack with me though if the first one gives up. The power pack on the truck is in good condition though.

Ugh so tip the cab down. Works fine. Pull it into the shop. No air to the manifold all of a sudden (pulled the line to check). Just done. I mean I know, put a fitting on the power pack and run it that way off the shop air, but yeesh. My luck.

Block Heater 3116 LMTV... Is there an NPT port on side of engine?

Parked the truck overnight at -7 two nights ago. Starts right up, catches immediately, puffs a little smoke for 10 seconds and is good to go. Start the truck this morning, 28 degrees, takes three long runs of the starter button to catch. Go figure.

LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

Ok so popped the cab this morning had took a good long sober look. The alt bracket is intact and still on the engine - I was wrong before. The L angle bracket went with the alt. I think what probably happened is the long bolt worked out, the alt flopped around, and snapped off the other two. It...

    air lines - refresh

Maybe this is a nerd thing but I am kind of curious what color standard OP has in mind. We know blue for service brakes and red for parking brakes, and I see commercial trailers with green hookups which I always took to be the lights / electrical. But what colors might be picked for the other...

Yeah I agree with all that. Just something to get going. Well we'll see. Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll keep the updates coming.

LMTV Alternator Disaster, engine now catastophic

I carry loctite around like women carry tubes of lipstick in their purses. The thing I am trying to grok here is how the suggestion to use a pair of shorter bolts would work like he was suggesting. Since it has to go through.
