    Snow chains on FMTV tires

Do you ever put chains on the trailer tires?

Fun LMTV article on Four Wheeler's website today.

I do! I designed and fabricated them, modeled after the medical litter racks I've seen in Blackhawks and cargo aircraft. Here are some of the pictures I used for inspiration... And here is some of what it looks like... Also, did you know the troop seats in LMTVs and other cargo trucks...

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

I have a couple pictures and videos, but I was so busy that I mostly forgot about that part. Four Wheeler just posted an article... https://www.fourwheeler.com/news/2021-colorado-blizzard/

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

Colorado had a big blizzard on Sunday, dumping 2-3' of wet/dense snow across the Denver area. Denver gets a storm like this about once every 5-10 years (e.g. flood of 2013, 3' blizzard of 2006, etc.). The news said this was the 4th largest blizzard on record. We spent 12+ hours out around...

    M1079 Transmission Fluid Question

To rephrase my "don't believe the hype" statement, it doesn't seem like switching to ATF does anything significant. Does it shift a little better, or is that placebo effect? The oil has a higher boiling point, but will you ever reach it? Trivialities! So it ends up largely being a waste of...

    M1079 Transmission Fluid Question

I have ATF in mine, but I don't think you should believe the hype. There are lots of arguments why to change to ATF, but none of them are really a technical/scientific explanation. The justifications mostly revolve around "I changed it, and it seemed better, or didn't blow up" or "Other...

Fun LMTV article on Four Wheeler's website today.

I like being able to swap between cargo truck mode and overlanding truck mode, so I keep it simple. (y)

Fun LMTV article on Four Wheeler's website today.

This is about my truck. It will be in the June 2021 print issue (on sale in May). https://www.fourwheeler.com/overland-adventure/2020/lmtv-overland-build/

3D Printed Tachometer Gauge Pod, with 12V / USB Outlets

Automobiles are some of the most highly engineered products on the planet. It spoils us, and sets a high standard for what we want. There is like a million man-hours of engineering that goes into a single vehicle design before it rolls off the production line with a slick custom injection...

3D Printed Tachometer Gauge Pod, with 12V / USB Outlets

Just so you know what I was thinking, every bit of how it is currently is intentional. Those aren't things I overlooked. If the face plate isn't flat across the front, there is no way to 3D print it (in FDM 3D printing) to get a nice smooth print. One side of the teeter-totter would be flat...

3D Printed Tachometer Gauge Pod, with 12V / USB Outlets

Yeah, and the wire bundle is really stiff. Trying to get it to connect to the switches, and then bunch it up inside the box is challenging. I had a few iterations before this, based off the original "cool looking" tach pod, each getting bigger and bigger, and they still didn't fit. I made...

3D Printed Tachometer Gauge Pod, with 12V / USB Outlets

I've been working on a new tach pod, that can also hold the winch switches. This will probably (eventually) get more revisions, because it's big, ugly, hangs over the front of the heater a little, etc., and I don't like it. There were a couple iterations to get to this one, and the reason for...

    3D Printed Seal Driver

For me, I've calculated that 3D prints cost me about $2/hr to make (on hobbyist level 3D printers), including typical filaments, but not including design time, extra hardware (e.g. threaded inserts, fasteners, etc.), or if I have to remove a ton of supports. Making quality designs takes a lot...

Changing the front cab mounts on the 1078A1

This bracket? We didn't have to remove the bumper. Just support the cab with a jack, take the bolts out, and swap it.

Changing the front cab mounts on the 1078A1

I hadn't really thought about it. I generally do try to include detailed instructions with any of my stuff, however there's not much to the cab mounts... it's a rubber ring with a bolt through it. Take the nut off, pick the cab up with a jack, swap the rubber bushing, put it back together...

    3D Printed Seal Driver

Those are pretty simple. Adding the threaded inserts adds some cost (both to buy a quality insert, and installation labor & tools). The only hard part is getting a HMMWV door and a mirror to take accurate measurements from. I'm kind of surprised a plastic part holds up there. If you bump a...

I'm working on some. The originals are polyurethane, and these will be too.

    3D Printed Seal Driver

Have a link? I'm not very familiar with much of the HMMWV stuff.

    3D Printed Seal Driver

This is a silly argument, because there is no upper limit on how much margin you can add. I could say that your roll cage on your truck isn't good enough, because clearly you don't know what you're doing and didn't add enough margin "like I would have", blah blah blah. Engineering always has...
