That should work just fine as they (The alternators(Self Regulating)) Are fitted across a wide range of M.series vehicles.

It is a generator fault. IF you connected the batteries incorrectly the input I.C. is fried. And now you have a full blown generator fault. You have to change the transistors and or rectifier in the back of the unit. As an aside, It is not possible to 'Reverse the polarity' on an alternator.

I don't see why your unit will not work. Having checked everything else, Have you checked the output of the inverter?. We have a 'Dometic', And a full size household fridge freezer in my Camper..and both work just fine. The inverter is 7000 w. continuous capability. (Off 8, 100AH batteries.)...
