    Considering LMTV

I wasn't paying attention and loaded 11,000 pounds in my 1078 once. I only drove it a couple of miles, but I did walk around it to make sure the wheels were up to the task. Drove it home and unloaded it and then checked the weight on the receipt. The rubber bumpers on mine are painted and...

LMTV as an RV in California

When they say baptism by fire, they mean baptism by fire and blood... Also, there is no shallow end to this pool. Keep a log of your trip too. So much is going to happen you will soon forget. Who did you sucker in to going with you?

M1078 Build: not a camper nor cargo truck....

And the OH 1078 Coupe is born... Nicely done. The only fault I could find was with the joke at the end.... : )

LMTV as an RV in California

I would suggest giving yourself way more time than you think you will need to get it back. I put myself under a time crunch and it adds a lot of stress to the trip. Make it an adventure. Put time into getting it ready up front and then head out. You don't get too many chances to see the US...

    M-1088 Electrical Problems

As far as problem number 2 goes, there is a circuit breaker that controls just the headlights (CB 78). It is the only self resetting CB in the panel. I know this because the same thing happened to me several times on my way back from TX. My headlights always came back on after a fashion and I...

    Keyed Ignition Switch Issues

I removed the M series Light switch and replaced it with a flat piece of metal that I painted black. I also had to epoxy a notched plate behind the key switch so it would not rotate in the hole when I started it. Also, just so I don't give the impression that I am anything other than a total...

    Keyed Ignition Switch Issues

Just because I always think of the dumbest possible thing that I could possibly do, if you set it up that way, you could start the vehicle, remove the key and put it in your jacket, drive off without your jacket and stop the vehicle. Now you are stuck there until someone brings you the key or...

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

James, Thank you, that is very generous. I have the socket and the shim pack. I am very interested in making my own hub tool (or buying one) because I think I may have to do this again. I have seen the set up from Steve6x6x6 in the old post (below). I do have a question though, how do you...

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

I agree, but you have to remove the spindle nut to get to the roller bearings to re-pack them. It seems like I could put the nut back on (on tight to 50ft-lbs, back off a quarter turn, then tighten to 10-20ft-lbs) and not have it at the same depth as the previous guy within the tolerance they...

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

Thanks. I am still trying to figure out setting the gear lash. I am starting to lose faith in the TM. In the -20-3 (10-9), it says you ignore steps 21 through 24 if you are just packing the wheel bearings for PMCS, but steps 21 through 24 are all about setting the gear lash. I am thinking I...

Cleaned up the interior and started “soundproofing” the interior

The fact that you did all that with second hand stuff makes it even cooler. That is some nice work and you will soon have your cabin in the woods, and in the city, and at the Walmart...

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

Sorry, I meant the inner bearing that should be packed was getting flushed with differential oil on its way out. When I took the wheel apart, the inner bearing was as clean as the outer bearing. You answered my question though. Thanks again.

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

Thanks, they were both oil floating for a bit.... This is the picture that had me questioning it.... https://www.steelsoldiers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=582710&d=1442855113

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

So, it looks like it was the wheel hub seal. It is in 3 distinct pieces. I have the wheel disassembled and I have one quick question. The -20 states to pack the inner roller bearings. That make sense (mine were washed clean by the differential oil). It does not mention packing the outer...

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

Thanks everyone. You have confirmed something for me: I don't know what I am doing. In the interest of checking the simple/easy thing first, I would like to check the axle vent, but again, I don't know where it is. I don't see anything that looks like it in Figure 134 and I didn't see...

Differential fluid leak at rear wheel

My driver rear wheel is leaking differential oil and I would like to fix it. Since taking the wheel off is a bit of a pain and then deadlines the vehicle in my driveway until I get the part, I was hoping to get the part ahead of time. The flaw in that plan is that I don't know what to order...

    FMTV Anti Theft starter relocation

Thanks, I have found them on-line but yours looked like it was already in a snap in blank that was the size of the dash cut out.

    FMTV Anti Theft starter relocation

Nicely done. You could go one step further and label the switch something stupid/unrelated (like "Work Light" or "Winch Power") so it doesn't even cross their mind. Also, do you have a source for the covered toggle you used? I am looking for that exact switch.

    Seat Belt Problem

I just want to echo what coachgeo said. Mine were very picky. Even slightly out of vertical and it would not extend. I thought I broke it. I remounted it in the truck and it works great.

    Switch Panel Wiring

BuiltMFG, first let me say I love your posts and your mods. You do next level work. I am a huge fan of the Electrical System Foldout. All of the wires are numbered (and the numbers match the vehicle harness if they haven't worn off), and their location in the Fold Out is referenced in...
