I would use the barring tool access to inspect the flywheel. That access port is on the injector pump side, opposite side of the starter.
This is the tool that goes in that hole.
If it ends up being a regulator or bearing, read this thread.

check the alternator bracket on the bottom adjustment slide, make sure its not broken. also verify the rear support to manifold is present. and the dirty word spacer is between the gen and mounting bracket.
come visit, bring family, have a shop with heat, tools, cold frothy drinks, bring a camper and plug in next to ours
also have a couple genny's and a 33 and 70kw load tester. And an AMi if you get things a bit too warm.
The Onan 7500 thats in our camper gives an hour and a calender time on replacing belt. They werent hard to do, but the removing it from the camper and the gajillion skrews that hold the skin on were the worst part.
Does the governor on the back of the injector pump look like its been molester, I mean, worked on by a 52d? can you adjust the hz/volts down before it safety's out?
that looks like the same one on my first truck, 96 freightliner. there will be a part number on the case of that pump, I will go get a pic of a different pump, (like same, but different) for locating the pn. Then google is your friend.
