Steel Soldiers MV of the month 2018 - November VOTE HERE!

It's always hard to pick one. I voted for 155 because of the almost-tie a couple of months ago, thought he deserved a really close finish on this one, which he got. The win was by 1 vote. But I really love Miggins' forklift! Had it not been for the above reason, he'd have had my vote (no...

Chinook Mishap @ OK Vet's Day Parade Investigation - 11/2018

Agreed. A lot of the veterans are used to such helos as Hueys and Cobras, and didn't ever experience the difference in rotorwash of heavy lift birds like the CH-53 and the Hook. Big surprise! The pilot(s) was hotdogging too, which often has negative results. Judgement should overrule...

    Mule not starting

Once you get your ignition worked out, good fuel helps a lot! My mule was always a cranky starter, I was using regular unleaded with additives and stabilizer. I ran it sometimes on ethanol free aviation fuel, on which it started better, but ran rather hot. Recently, I'm able to get...

SQUEEZING THROUGH ! ALWAYS Check Your Clearances

It would seem the shelving wasn't up to the load it was carrying. If it was that willing to go, it could have gone from a rough loading/unloading of a pallet. Bet there was some yellin' after that. Cheers

Chinook Mishap @ OK Vet's Day Parade Investigation - 11/2018

Aggravated finger-pointing in progress! Krier unfortunately displays his lack of full understanding of helicopters in wanting barricades - they either get blown over and become projectiles, or worse go up into the helo's rotors. They just need to keep the ground personnel further back. From...

    Belgian F-16 Destroyed: "Accidental" Cannon-fire 2018-10-14

Surprising, isn't it!? My younger son was a Marine Corps ordnanceman on Cobras before being assigned to V-22s. He said they had innumerable drillls and lectures on that 20mm nose gun being able to fire just by turning the barrels (like grabbing a barrel for support while getting up off the...

Working on the FV1801A or Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4×4, CT, Austin Mk.1 AKA Austin Champ

You know I am not a huge fan of the tan camo. ;) It will be 383 in the near future, once the FHT and shelter are ready for paint. Like the attached picture, but with the lines a bit closer to the camo pattern from the manual. Everything tan in my collection will eventually be 383, along with...

    Belgian F-16 Destroyed: "Accidental" Cannon-fire 2018-10-14

But if both planes are on the ground, and both are pilotless...... maybe an exception could be made!rofl I imagine his buddies already took care of the kill mark, regardless of the official rules. Maybe I missed it in here, but a bit of information to keep in mind - most of the multi-barrel...

Working on the FV1801A or Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4×4, CT, Austin Mk.1 AKA Austin Champ

I will attest to the fact that the Champ is very quiet! This is motivating me to try to get mine running now. Nice M1028 behind you! :p Cheers

Steel Soldiers 20th Anniversary Logo contest VOTE THREAD

I have to say there is some talent on display here, very difficult to make a choice of just one. My compliments and respect to all the designers. In the end, I went for simplicity. Cheers

    Towing with M1009

Before the big debate begins - the stock M1009 is limited by the military to a 1/4 ton trailer (M416 and similar) by the 'weak' pintle hook mounting, not the truck itself. If you want to tow something bigger/heavier safely, you'll want to put a receiver hitch under it. Cheers

Fasttruck, I can't make out the name on the front of that V, can you identify it? Cheers

    Working on the M1078 LMTV

I find it amusing that you sold the truck to my little sister's high school boyfriend - small world! Cheers

    H-161E/U Headset foam

For these style headsets, my experience has been yes, they all seem about the same size (headsets and flight-helmet earcups). If I recall correctly, the ones for CVCs (armour crew helmets) are slightly larger, but I'll have to check that. Cheers

A slight correction to the above - WR is Water Reducible CARC Cheers

    H-161E/U Headset foam

No! But they are bearable. ;) One of the biggest comfort issues will be how good the ear seals are (the plastic coated part that clips around the edge between the cup and your head). If those have deteriorated inside, they can get uncomfortable quite quickly. It is worth having new ones...

    H-161E/U Headset foam

Yes, the heavier, inside, foam has a 'cup' cut in it for the speaker. Or sometimes it is made with a thin flat piece and a thicker piece with a circle cut out glued to it (ie - there is a foam layer behind the speaker). Then there is a thin lighter foam piece that covers the entire inner bit...

    H-161E/U Headset foam

In keeping my flight helmets up over the years, I've replaced the earcup foam several times. Being a cheapskate, I prefer not to spend the high $$ for the purpose-made replacements, so I've had good luck with foam from craft stores - thicker, denser stuff for around the speaker, thinner lighter...

    An interesting article

"....but they takes maintenance to keep them from murdering people on the road." Well, no kidding! (In my mind that was said in Gunnery Sergeant Hartman's voice, using different words). So does every other vehicle on the road (not that they get it). Cheers
