I have mine wired that way with a keyed switch turning the relay on and off , thus disconnecting the batteries. That way I leave my light switch in the ON position and I never worry about turning them on and off. It's worked fine for several months so far.
I modified my regular tailpipe into a fording exhaust stack. Ordered a section of 3" pipe and an elbow. The bracket was already in place. I haven't totally decided on the heat guard; I may change it later.
I had an issue very similar to yours with my 1078. All was fine then one day it was stuck in 2nd gear. I too replaced a mangled speed sensor to no avail. And in the end the problem was my transmission fluid level was low . And the speed sensor wasn't even needed since the transmission works fine...
I took my runflats out as did a friend of mine on his hmmwv. Neither of us used the PVC spacers nor has had the slightest problem after many miles. We both carry spares which have never been used. To each his own.
