I had the same problem. Replaced them 3x and they still leaked and one fell out of the retainer the last time. All the stock type ones are made in China. I found a new style USA made seal and retainer and so far they're the only ones that don't leak.
I put grease on the U joints, the thrust washers and in the spindle bushings, but don't fill up the knuckles like the military does. Seems to work fine so far.
Did the new spindle bushing fit the axle shaft? On the two trucks I did I had to take the spindles and axles to a local 4x4 place to get them turned on the lathe to fit because the spindle bushings were just slightly oversize for a custom fit.
Had this exact same problem. Replaced my spindle and kingpin bushings, replaced all the vents with remote breather lines and it still leaked. The last time one of the seals even fell out of the retainer. The replacement seals are all Chinese made and just suck. I gave up on them and went to a...
Dual circuit brakes are the best upgrade for safety sake. The stock brakes are more than enough to stop a deuce. I have 11.00x20 radials on my 109 and haven't noticed any difference in braking.
Moving it up does make a difference. When I installed a muffer on my 109 I didn't shorten the stack to stock length so it is up pretty high. I really don't hear much exhaust noise now from the cab. Mostly what's left is engine and transmission and transfer case noise. I plan on sound proofing...
Did you smell it? If it's gear oil you'll know. That's almost certainly what it is though, I've been plagued by this problem on my A2 so I know very well what it looks like. I would recommend ditching the spring vents and going to remote breather lines on all axles and the trans and transfer...
It's a great age to get into deuces. As mentioned above they were designed for people our age. Working on them is way easier at our age too. I got A2 at 20 and my 109 at 21. I use them for ranch stuff, camping trips, shooting platforms, going on dates with girls, driving to college sometimes...
Vents. I replaced my seals and repacked the bearings a few times and the vents built up enough pressure to make them leak. I cleaned the vents out but it still leaked. They can even build up pressure just sitting there. I replaced all the vents with remote breather lines and no leaks so far, at...
Looks outstanding! That's exactly what I want my deuces to look like. One of these days I'll get around to painting them. The mechanical stuff is taking up all my time and money.
There is no NAPA number for the seals and none of them are USA made. You'd have to order from one of the surplus places.
I replaced the ones in my A2 three times with the stock type seals and gear oil still floods past. I got fed up with those seals, so I'm switching over to a new type I found...
Got the new Firestone T831s mounted on my powder coated wheels! Also rebuilding the whole brake system. Rebuilt all wheel cylinders and I'm replacing every brake line. It's comforting seeing brand new brake lines everywhere.
