When my lift pump leaked on my M1009.....i had diesel all over ground.....i didnt have your symptoms, but different trucks.....mine was a bugger to change, hard line was hard to get started, tight space on M1009.....It wasnt expensive, wasnt terrible to do....id change it out if I was you, new...
I wouldnt like that hose at my feet.....id probably route it under cab and add new access in corner. Air rises, so air flows through system, it should theoretically reach your reservoir and escape if fill cap is "vented" at plastic reservoir.
