Probably not storage paint, the red stuff is an insulating paint put on windings to insulate. But not put on like the pictures show--that was a total fubar. It is a fairly tough paint, you need to clean off the area where the brushes are supposed to contact.
Uh, don't try that capacitor trick. Any capacitor large enough to do the task would create surges large enough to potentially damage the charging circuit.
The MEP-005 is a Hercules 6 cylinder (the 298 ) with a Roosa Master. The MEP-006 i sthe Allis-Chalmers with a similar pump. And the MEP-004 is a Hercules 4 cylinder (the 198 ) with the Roosa Master as well.
Generally they are a reliable and good engine.
Just for the record...
Electricity needs a complete path in order for current to flow. If the generator is connected to nothing at all, then a ground is meaningless--it is one hand clapping. Once you attach it to something then a ground becomes significant. Most of the MEPs I see are...
Any of the military vehicle parts places should be able to get you one. I'd suggest checking MV magazine or one of the other Military equipment/vehicles magazines for advertisements, or Google...
One thing to be very careful of is that to meet code (NEC) when you have an automatic swtich, and an automatic starting generator, the generator must be also rated at that load too. But... I'm not sure what NEC says when the generator has automatic over current protection (such as found on most...
One bit of advice, from someone with Hummers (which have both aluminum and steel in the body) is that steel becomes sacrificial (rusts) when used with aluminum. You must either carefully electrically isolate the aluminum from the steel, or find other ways to protect the steel or you will end up...
One route to go that has not been discussed is:
Generator Manual Transfer Switch - 100 Amp
which is basically a CH transfer switch. Well built, but a bit large, it is clearly a professional solution to the 'problem' of doing it right.
The quickest way to tell is to check the frequency meter. The meter will max at about 65 Hz (IIRC) on the 50/60 units, and a bit over 400 on the 400 Hz units. Easy to spot that difference.
Why shut it off, while running you should without any problems be able to push the start switch up and flash. If it grinds when you do that then the speed sensor (intake side of the engine) is not working correctly.
Best is to just force yourself to do it the 'right' way (hold the switch in...
First, great thread, even though it was probably hard to do! Hats off to you for posting it.
How does that jumper work? Well, based on my life as a (OK, part time) EE, I suspect that there is a voltage divider resistor set on that sense line coming in. The divider is configured for 240 volts...
Some alternatives are either to custom wind your own resistors, use an adjustable resistor (those are available as needed, but not as common as they were years ago) and to use a combination of parallel and series resistors to get the desired value(s) and wattage. I can help with the math for...
Personally I think I'll do a terminal strip instead of a switch, but do you have any idea of the currents drawn in those three leads? A three position double throw switch is not uncommon, and would be a faster way (does anyone care about fast, I probably would not go back to 3 phase very often...
Well, crap, you're right--no way to buy. I suppose you could message the seller and see if he has any more, but I think the button gets removed when the number the seller lists have been sold. (When we list stuff we have to say a big number, like 500, so that the listing lives for a 'long time'.)
You gotta learn to do searches
NIB DONALDSON PANEL AIR FILTER 12" X 11" X 2.5" P131919 | eBay
this appears to be the right filter, and at under $30 is more attractive. But I'm sure that there are cars/trucks that have filters the same size.
eBay listing Military Generator AIR FILTER mep004a mep005a mep006a | eBay has one for about $90.
IMHO, that's too much! I did research these a year or so ago, and they were commercially available but I don't remember exactly what the details were.
Perhaps in a while I'll pull mine off and...
I always apply load as soon as the frequency is stable, the voltage is stable, and I've done a review of the engine gauges to ensure all are within normal limits. So about 10 seconds after I reset frequency (as my generator will startup with a slightly off frequency.) Once running for about 5 to...
