Question on a MEP002 from the Electrically Ignorant

Piece of cake! Go to eBay and search for "vfd phase" (without the double quotes, of course) and you will see how to do it. Also I'd suggest joining "Garage Journal", The Garage Journal , as there are a bunch of very skilled guys there who can answer questions like this as well...

Question on a MEP002 from the Electrically Ignorant

Another NEMA chart is at Nema Charts and this reference shows twist lock as well...

    MEP004A Frequency Problem

And a push button on the top to reset it if there is ever an over-speed condition, so perhaps that is what he's referring to as the reset button? I too should have mentioned the bogus frequency control on the panel! I'm sure that confuses a lot of people who don't know that adjustment is only...

    Mep-016 and 4A032 Questions

Incorrect? Well, since it appears you have two of them, one is bound to be right? (I could be wrong, but it appears there is already a flywheel on the generator head, in addition to one on the engine.)

    MEP004A Frequency Problem

I agree with Sewerzuk, I think your engine is running at way too low RPMs. Certainly with the throttle pushed in full way, it is very possible. Does the engine seem to be running fast, or slow (tough without experience or a tach, but...) You want it at 1800 RPM to generate 60 Hz power, but any...

Question on a MEP002 from the Electrically Ignorant

I'm sure Aunt Nema would agree with this, but if you are of this mind-set (which is good!) then an alternative might well be to find another collector nearby and enlist his/her help too... I've gotten lots of great help from those who have more experience with a given piece of equipment, and...

    my experience with wet stacking

When I rebuilt my MEP-004's engine, one of the things I discovered was that the exhaust manifold was full of sludge. Cylinder 1 (front most, nearest the fan) was the worst, while #2 was noticeable but not as bad. Cylinders 3 and 4 had only a nominal amount of wet stacking. This led me to believe...

Mep002A sticky linkage on start up!!!

Idle? You do realize you never idle one of these generators, right?

    MEP004A Frequency Problem

Assuming that the generator set works... either: 1. When starting continue hold the start switch up until the volt meter and/or frequency meter read close to working voltage/frequency. There is a special interlock that prevents problems with the starter running so this is safe (and the...

    MEP004A Frequency Problem

Ken has a flair for understatement! There are other alternatives, both long term (replacement) and for short term. Some digital VOMs have frequency (Saw one in Harbor Fright the other day, in fact) and the Kill-A-Watt device also will read frequency. My MEP-004's frequency meter transducer has...

    MEP-006A Won't start. A little help please

I'm not sure what Injection Pump this engine uses... But, A fellow nearby had an MEP-006 with a no-start just like yours. I gave them the manuals for it, then forgot about the generator for about a year. Later, I went back and it was gone, and I asked if they'd gotten it running. The answer was...

    Looking for genset-related wisdom

Like Deuceaid says, check those tiny passages (jets) on the carb. The photos show a lot of 'crap' there, I'll bet they are clogged.

    Copper O-rings for glowplugs 003

It will leak... An auto parts store might have the right sized copper o-rings, and (long shot) I know Harbor Freight has a copper o-ring kit, but the sizes in it are a bit limited.

    Ether Primer for Military Generators

I think my local CarQuest has the orange can of ether. It is used on other diesel engines. There is nothing wrong with ether when *cold* but I've never needed it. You are much better off with a block heater. I see one site online that has them for about $20 too...;-)

    mep-004a starting issue

:jumpin::jumpin::jumpin::mrgreen::mrgreen::beer: That's a winner! Once you mentioned the 30 second run, followed by a much shorter run, something clicked in my mind. Those Stanadyne injection pumps are very sensitive to restrictions in the fuel return lines... We have similar problems with the...

    mep-004a starting issue

Sure do... Carefully check your fuel return lines from the injection pump and from the injectors! That will stop the engine if blocked as quickly and as cleanly as the fuel shutoff solenoid. If it was greatly restricted, then I could see it doing what you describe. It sounds like you are running...

    mep-004a starting issue

If you are getting white smoke, then there is fuel in the cylinders (that is the white smoke, and it will smell like raw diesel if that is it.) How cold was it? Remember, you have to hold the start switch to start position until the unit is running and producing power, you don't let off as...

the proud owner of a MEP-004a.

the 004 will run on diesel, and though not recommended, kero (lubricity issues) and is not really a multi-fuel engine.
