    Mep 004a

Can't speak for him, but in my case I have custom built transfer switches that convert the house from single phase to three phase (basically, on a circuit by circuit basis spread the loads across all three phases.) It works quite well, though there are still balance issues as winter power usage...

    Mep 004a

Why is there something in the back of my mind about this 'problem'... :???: If I have time, I'll review my manuals and see if I see something, but I've a powerful feeling that this is not an unknown issue, but is caused by a specific condition or problem. I'll look and see what is up, but also...

Uh, the battle short switch is not on is it?

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

I'm sure I'm somewhat wetstacked too... I may dig out my bigger load and give it a go and see if that loads it enough (an old water heater...) My fuel usage was decent, and it does appear that the oil level issue I thought I had was just the fact that when running it was on unlevel ground...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

I figured I'd post a picture of the MEP and one of its tow vehicles (I usually tow it with my big Dodge, but it was away on a trip when I moved the generator.) The Hummer is a 95 NA, and it moves the set along reasonably well.

Well the obvious would be to remove the bulbs and check them... If they are original, it is very possible that you are seeing a vibration induced failure.

MEP-002A Left in Prime/Run for 20min. Is it damaged?

He really didn't say that... What he said was based on general diesel techniques and practices, in that the 'lift' pump simply will slightly pressurize the fuel system (to about 4 PSI or so) and that won't cause fuel to go anywhere it should not go.

MEP-002A Left in Prime/Run for 20min. Is it damaged?

Worse case, your batteries may need charging. The fuel pump running is normal for when in operation.

    Connecting MEP to house

just so that people in the future understand, some houses are wired with a combined neutral/ground bus. This configuration (was) acceptable when the house was built, and is considered acceptable today for existing construction (grandfather, so to speak) though for new construction a separate...

    Blew up my new MEP-005a!

I understand... Being able to get use out of the parts is good too. :-P

    Blew up my new MEP-005a!

Personally, if the unit was in the condition you describe I would consider rebuilding it. Find a unit (like the one described above) nearby with a good engine (or parts?) and make it work. I know when I rebuilt my MEP-004 I did consider just throwing in a new engine. Fortunately for me, it...

    Trouble getting MEP-003A going

That electrical house was using rule-of-thumb current rating and didn't factor in the fact it was a multi-conductor cable. A single conductor, with free air circulation, will allow higher currents. However, a careful monitoring of temperatures is a valid thing to do. Most heating happens at the...

Startup, operation, and load test of MEP-004a

Nice looking set... I listened to your video, while listening to my MEP-004A (with ASK, too!) running as the power is off still. These are fantastic generator sets, will probably handle several houses without even blinking (or sounding like it has a load!!!):-P

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Ike, no the MEP-004 has two electric pumps. It does have a Stanadyne/Roosa Master pump, which is why I'm wondering if I do have a leak. I'll recheck the oil level when I get it back in its parking spot (which is flat and level) and see how it looks. We shut down at about 9 PM last night, and...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

I guess I should also make sure the generator's level when checking the oil too! Seems the left side is on a bit of a hill, I forgot that. Maybe the oil level issue is a 'red herring'. Can anyone tell that the forum where I spend most of my time is down? :-P I'm running out of 'fun' things to...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

It appears I have slightly more oil in the pan after four hours running then when I started. Not a horrible amount, but enough that once I shutdown I will have to investigate... I could be wrong, but don't think so! Oil is still spotlessly clean, too, which is good--no blow-by.

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Irene turned off the lights a couple of hours ago. Rather localized (daughter down the road has lights, we don't). So today was the first real test of the generator... We'll call it a success, with a couple of minor things. Hit the breaker switch to put it online, and nothing. Odd, did a bulb...

    Trouble getting MEP-003A going

Naw, do a 'binary' search--that's faster. I start with fuel in to the injection pump. Have fuel, then it is the pump or something after (injectors). No fuel? Then I go back and check the input to the filter(s).
  20. PeterD

    MEP003 siezed up

I'll say it too, those injectors are horrific... I'd say there was a lot of moisture in that engine, and likely it will need to be taken completely down and rebuilt. I don't think you'll be able to salvage the injectors either, but you might want to take them to a diesel pump and injection shop...
