Did you get rid of the 3-4 gear flair? (what it is called when a transmission revs between shifts) that will cause rapid wear of the 4th gear clutch pack.
TOBASH, you will be happier with a well built 4l60 (700R4) it has a higher 4th gear and you will lose less power to heat because it is a more efficient transmission.
And it will have no problem with the power and torque from your Detroit
Every time lately I try and do a job "quickly" something goes wrong, slow and patient seems to serve me well these days, but I am not 30,40 or even 50 anymore...
I have drained mine several times lately, no loss, I just use a 5gal bucket and after a couple gallons or so you can work the upper system.
EDIT, drain it out of the lower hose/pipe drain valve.
One of my boxes has a little tizzy fit now and again, but because I have a dash lamp connected to one of the glow plug wires I can see it is actually going into after glow mode where it is "flashing" the glow plugs on and off, I give it about ten seconds and they get warm enough for the engine...
Sounds like you still have a glow plug issue, have you put a voltmeter on one of the glow plug wires to make sure it is getting juice? does the wait light come on for 6-10 seconds?
I am not 100% sure but at 100 deg I don't think the cold start circuit even comes into play
There is no "complete" service manual, there are several levels of repair TMs and then there are operator and parts TMs.
This is a completely different world than you are used to and it takes a little time to adapt.
Start with the operator TM, it gives you all the operating info and some basic...
Temp gauge should not be necessary, even Matt admits it never gets close to being hot, the TH400 puts out allot more heat than the 4L60, the beauty of a lockup TC and a much more efficient design.
EDIT, now if you have a TH400 and want to scare the crap out of yourself put a temp gauge on it.
These are "rebuilds" but why the heck did they not upgrade these to A2s while they were spending a bazillion dollars on them.. or at least serpentine belts, what a waste..
These are some strange trucks, very high serial numbers and mostly 6.5L GEP (probably de-tuned) and the 242 TC, otherwise they are like early A1 trucks, three speeds, V BELTS (UUGGG), etc.
This subject comes up from time to time, I think in the end most feel the cost and a major increase in maintenance is just not worth it, the seals and the "tube" they seal to will wear when pressurized causing the increased maint. and loss of reliability, going into the hubs to fix is a PITA
