I had an extremely stubborn drain plug on a differential once that was so tight I was concerned that something would break when using a long breaker bar. Someone told me to drive the vehicle until the differential case was warm and then hold a piece of dry ice against the plug for a minute...
It is possible to synchronize the MEP-003A gensets. This is common practice in the military. Normally if you see a trailer with two 003 gensets mounted, they are designed to be connected in this way. This allows one genset to be shut down for PM while the other genset continues to maintain...
Many years ago, maybe 40 years, I read an article somewhere about a guy that was in a boat out in the Gulf of Mexico that broke the driveshaft completely in two pieces, and he couldn't raise any help via radio. The guy supposedly by-passed the rectifiers on the engine alternator. He then used...
The MEP-003A engine is designed to run at 1800 RPM. Once it starts, adjust the RPM until you are getting 60 Hz. Never idle the engine or you wil damage the VR for certain. When you shut it down, shut it down at 1800 RPM. When you start it back up, it should come up to ~1800 if you havent...
If the engine is running, the fuel should squirt out the petcock under good pressure. Sometimes you need to rod out the petcock with a piece of wire if it is crudded up and hasn't been opened in a while. You will need a good quality oil filter strap wrench to get the filter loose. Have you...
Make sure the fuel filter is on tight, but be careful not to overtighten or you'll never get it loose again. I would actually recommend removing the fuel fiter and replace it with a new filter rather than tightening the old filter. You need to thoroughly clean and dry the whole external...
The A3s have an air dryer that should keep moisture out of the tires, assuming the air dryer is working properly. Mine wasn't, so i replaced it. Also, will the beads work when you have a beadlock installed? I would assume not. I run 55 - 60 psi in the tires and the truck runs much better and...
Also common is for the solenoid to not move the lever to the on position if the linkage is dirty. If the genset ever fails to start within a reasonable time, make sure the linkage isn't keeping the fuel shut off.
Unfortunately, the CTIS system gets blamed for a lot of problems caused by other systems. It is actually an amazingly simple system once you start looking at the different components internally.
Driving the truck between flushes is required, not only to heat up the fluid, but also because there are actuators in the transmission that will have motor oil trapped in them. Although the engine is running, turning the torque converter and the transmission pump is running, the trapped motor...
The transmission holds about 21 quarts. I would recommend using the Dexron III and not TranSynd because of the price. TranSynd is very expensive. it is better, but only as far as extending the fluid change intervals. If you want to use TranSynd, I have a new 5 gallon pail for cheap so PM...
Are you sure it's the CTIS manifold blowing the air and not the dryer or the relief valve? I thought the same thing, but it turned out to be a faulty air dryer blowing the air, along with the emergency relief valve. I found a complete replacement NOS dryer unit on Ebay for a very good price...
There are several diagrams of the pneumatic system for the A3 in the TMs. They are very confusing to follow, however. I found that using different colored highlighters for the different circuits really makes it easier to follow and understand. Look in the TMs under brake system, compressor...
Terry McClanahan with American Outfitters already makes an upgraded alternator bracket for the A3. I've never seen one, however. I've never had a problem on my A3, but apparently problems with the alternator brackets on A3s are quite common.
I see the adapters all over the place. I bought two for $10 apiece at the GA Rally and there were a lot more available from several vendors. Epay always has some listed and occasionally for a good price.
My 69 Kaiser always starts without issues down to the teens. Below that I use 1 - 2 shots of ether and no problem. I quit using a block heater because it starts fine without one.
I get about 10-12 mpg on my stock A2 and about 8 - 10 on my A3, running straight diesel. I never exceed 52 mph with either and I don't accelerate hard. Easy driving will make a big difference. I live in the mountains.
