Is it safe/normal for a stock (ish) M1008 to be able to start and operate with only one alternator mounted? What issues (other than battery drainage) could arise from continuing to operate the vehicle in this manner? Also, how the heck is this even possible?

I was just reading about cleaning up things in the instrument cluster. I'm going to guess that once that happens it the Gen 2 light might come on. And maybe the Gen 1 light will chill out. Kind of a V8/Homer Simpson moment there.
