Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

The 6.2 exhaust noise from the stock mufflers is very quiet. All of the racket originates under the hood.

The Nox-Rust product is a newer technology based on gelled calcium sulfonate. It resembles a wax or bitumen coating but it is not. The gelled calcium sulfonate coatings are not oily so they don't mess with painted surfaces but they also don't soak into crevices like the Fluid Film products do.

The epoxy zinc on blasted metal is by far the best route but if you're patching up you're existing coatings under your truck there is a product from Daubert called Nox-Rust 121B. This is the "wax" coating used by GM on some of their frames. It's suitable for marginally prepared surfaces. It's...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

I always despised the international symbols. I can Google a word from a foreign language that I don't understand but I can't Google a symbol.

It's interesting if you consider what bearing manufacturers specialize in. SKF started with spherical roller bearings and ball bearings. Timken was tapered roller bearings. Torrington did needle bearings. Chicago Rawhide started rubber lip seals. There has been munch conglomeration since but...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

I had to put Taiwan made rod bearings in my engine because so much is backordered. I was able to get OEM piston rings from eBay. I reused the old pistons.

They take compression set and you can't retorque them with the fuel lines installed. They will leak. Also, the rails on the valve cover are too flimsy to properly seal on a gasket. These engines came from the factory with silicone sealant on the oil pan and valve covers. The timing cover uses...

Quick get those valve cover gaskets out and toss them in the garbage before you regret it.

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

It's an endemic problem to the 1973-1980 trucks. http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2021/09/i-hadnt-heard-about-c10-hood-problem.html?m=1

Stainless steel will still bleed rust when installed in wood. They are sensitive to crevice corrosion. You'll want silicon bronze or monel screws for best life. The new generation of coated construction screws are pretty good as well.

All of our shops are closing. They are too expensive to operate..I believe you have the same problem. The things you know about USA are quickly changing. Just keep that in mind. Otherwise, to avoid special tools you only need a band saw. Get pre-formed bends and cut them up to get the angles...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

K30 and CUCV except M1009 chassis, exhaust are the same. Stainless steel exhaust parts aren't exactly on the shelf here in USA either. Nearly every needs to be custom made. Out here on the USA west coast the custom shops are inundated with vintage Ferrari restorations so it's difficult to get...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

The heater core design doesn't lend itself to being recored. The radiator does. I have a premier shop locally that recores radiators. They aren't cheap. I junked my old radiator in the past because I couldn't afford to recore it. I regret that today now that I can afford the option. Just keep...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

I got mine at the local parts house. Murray is just about the only stock replacement option for cores and radiators for these trucks nowadays. Cavitation caused the failure, it eroded away right where water from the inlet hits the side of the tank. My new aluminium replacement hasn't failed yet...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

I've had a new aluminum core erode through at the tank within a few months of installing. At least it takes less than half an hour to change them.
