@Privatewrench I made the suggestion because I just went through the exact same thing. ;) After replacing all of the belts and hoses that the hose material had compressed somewhat and most of my hose clamps had loosened up allowing some drips. I thought it was oil until I smelled it.

Are you sure it's not coolant with iron sediment in it? They look awfully similar and even feel similar to the touch but coolant will have that sickly sweet smell.

Where'd you get that boot from? I haven't seen that style before.

Filter it and give it to someone who uses heating oil for winter heat. Don't go through all the effort to clean your fuel system and then risk putting that stuff back into your fuel tank.
