    MEP-003A hook up question

Better yet get a lightly used or never used 50 ft 50 amp rv cord off ebay which will likely be 6/4 or 3 #6 conductors and 1 #8 ground, these often much less expensive than you can otherwise buy SO cord. I picked up 2 35ft lengths with damaged plugs that way a couple of months ago for $60...

    MEP-003A hook up question

The problem is you can't be code legal with 6/3 SO cord, you could run a separate ground wire, but I think that this is an NEC violation since it is not in the same multi conductor bundle. I am not a professional though, so hopefully someone else can confirm. Regardless of the issue of...

    MEP-003A hook up question

Such stories on generator installations are all too common, it seems more Electricians get it wrong than get it right. The worse part is they get very offended if you tell them they have been doing things wrong

    MEP-003A hook up question

Careful on the TM it has errors in the voltage diagramd

    MEP-003A hook up question

Speddmon, I think this should be, will always be grounded IF hardwired to the transfer switch, if using some type of twist lock cord, etc. it may not be. Ike

    MEP-003A hook up question

In general you always want to use stranded copper when connecting to generators, motors, etc. due to vibration, MTW (Machine Tool Wire) rated wire is best, as it has finer strands than regular stranded and holds up to vibration better, SO (SOOW,SOEW, SJOW, etc.) cord is another good choice...

    MEP-003A hook up question

I would strongly suggest not using a wire nut for such safety connection in a high vibration environment

    MEP-003A hook up question

Speddmon, to address Andy's potential question of switching back and forth (assuming we are talking about a situation where the generator would be connected to the house for backup power by a pin and sleeve connector as you suggested and might also be used to power 3 phase shop tools, etc. at...

    MEP-003A hook up question

Speddmon, as I said you are the professional on the topic, no disagreement on my end, just going by the publications which seem to go against the current NEC rules. Ike

    MEP-003A hook up question

Speddmon, you are the electrical professional here and I know the NEC is constantly changing, when it comes to unbonding the neutral and grounding the generator frame I am just going by what I have been told by multiple generator professionals as well as what is published in the backup generator...

    MEP-003A hook up question

I suspect you could have a potentially dangerous ground loop condition if your neutral wire were to be cut or disconnected. If the electrician says its ok like it is, I would get a second opinion just to be safe. Ike

    MEP-003A hook up question

The meter reads the combination of volts between the marked L?-L? and the amps of L?, in the position shown on the photo it is measuring voltage from L1-L3 (Line to Line 240V) and amps on L3, the other 1 phase position measures voltage L3-L0 (so would be one of your 120V legs measuring L3 (L2...

    MEP-003A hook up question

Andy the generator frame can and should be connected to a ground rod, the important thing in most transfer switch installations is that the generator neutral to frame ground strap be disconnected so the only neutral to ground bonding takes place at the service entrance. Again this is in most...

    MEP-003A hook up question

Jim, I am not sure I understand what you don't understand, but here goes a try. Just to clarify the transfer switch is the device you use to wire the generator into your home wiring it lets you select between the utility company power and generator power it is also used to prevent back feeding...

    MEP-003A hook up question

Keep in mind I do not own a MEP-003a, but do own a smaller 3kw MEP-701a and have skimmed over the MEP-003a TM. First a little basic theory your generator internally is either a 6 or 12 lead reconnectable generator (the distinction does not matter for our purposes here) these leads are...
