I've been told, quite pointedly, by passer-by experts in parking lots, such things as... - The un-occupied pinion flange on my front axle is... "the power take-off for a winch" - My Bobbed Deuce is... "without question an M37" - "All deuces have 8 lugs per wheel! Someone must've modified yours...

Seems nobody wants to be the bad guy by stating the obvious here… This happened due to sheer negligence. As many members have mentioned over the years, the age and suspect maintenance history of these trucks warrants a thorough, bumper to bumper service at the first reasonable opportunity...

Hacked out some transmission alignment pins for my upcoming clutch,trans, etc., work. Got the idea from a post RustyStud made in a transmission thread here somewhere. 3/8 x 3-1/4 steel rods, tapered and slotted for a screwdriver on one end, threaded 3/8-16 on the other end.

That sounds like about exactly what I did to drill a 2" gauge hole in my dash where a 1" hole was... Used a socket as a pilot for the holesaw. A bit of resourcefulness makes a hobby like this so much more do-able.

Thanks for the input Gimpyrobb... I'm genuinely curious, what in particular have you found simplifies the job by removing the top plate before lowering the trans?
