Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Having a heater makes all the difference. It rained on my parade the other night, but the heater kept the cab nice and cozy!

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

OK, one of the last items for this heater project is getting the permanent hose clamp made and mounted under the radiator support. I made it out of 2 pieces of 3/4" aluminum square stock and drilled 1" holes between the 2 halves. The top half has thru holes and the bottom half has 1/4" N.C...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Success! I just warmed up the engine, opened the valves, purged the air out of the heater core and now I have hot air in the cab with no fluid leaks! Man, thats a good feeling and a long time in the making. *One thing I found is that with the front half of the air canister removed there is...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Today I plumbed in the heater hoses over to the heater core. My Stauff clamps are probably stuck on a cargo ship offshore so I had to use zip-ties as a temporary fill in. Once the hose clamps arrive I'll mount it all up proper and trim the long hose down to match.

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Are you talking about a fuel pump or water pump? I'm afraid I don't have any good answers to your fuel pump questions other than mine's doing fine without an AFC. This is a thread about an unusual heater core install and you'll get better answers to your questions if you start a thread...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

My 90° elbow hose finally arrived - it's a Gates 28466 which starts out at about 4" x 6". I trimmed off about 2" per end and it went on like a glove 😁 I cranked it up and idled it for awhile until the filter got warm. Only two leaks to tighten and everything is running good! I'll be running...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

I finally drained the radiator so that I could install the shutoff valves from the coolant heater kit; one on the water manifold with the included pipe bushing and one on the oil cooler in the existing pipe bushing. A section of hose connects the supply side and on the return side it's waiting...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

I think I have the bulk of the heater hose plumbing worked out. Following the instructions for the filter install and the advice of some over-the-road truckers I'm going to tee into the filter with the heater hoses so that there will be a bypass route if either the filter or heater core get...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Parts have been accumulating for adding a coolant filter including the Napa 4019 filter base, Donaldson filter, MIL-DTL-6000D military 5/8" coolant hose, various fittings and clamps. I designed up an adapter plate out of 3/8" stainless to attach to the outside of the oil cooler housing...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Today I finished plumbing ducting from the heater core to the cab and I got the wiring reconnected. Tested it out and the air blows pretty strong to the floor and "ok" to the defrost. Hopefully the ducting touching the resistors won't hurt anything...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Now that my turbo installation is complete this heater project is back on the front burner. I've had the heater/defroster diverter box mounted for awhile and now I have it plumbed to the engine bay after cutting a 4" hole in the firewall. Part of hooking up this heater will include...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

If you are excited about turbos on a 5-ton, you should read through this thread as it is one of the more comprehensive threads - at least for the M809 trucks... https://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?28133-818-now-with-turbo-and-pics&highlight=m818+turbo

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Thank you for the compliments, much appreciated. I would like to take credit for the M37, but that one belongs to a fellow collector in my town and it looks brand new top to bottom.

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

thanks for the offer :) If it involves MVs I might take you up on that, but right now I'm thinking of a few new projects like a VIC-1 control panel for the back of the cab and maybe a cab visor with HID/IR lights integrated into it. Working at a manufacturing plant with access to laser...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Well, for one, I wanted to use as many military issue parts as I could. My truck previously had a heater in it which was missing when I bought it so I wanted to use all of the existing holes in the firewall and dash to put parts back to their original location. Another reason is that I enjoyed...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

Reserved for part 2 The formed hoses tuck in just in time and only required minor clearancing for the outside hose. The power wire also gets routed through a grommet and into the heater box. There is a 10' piece of wire with correct connectors that will exit with the heater hoses and connect...

Heater in a can - Now you can have your turbo and heat it too!

...heat your cab, that is. Your turbo will be hot enough already :) I wanted to chronicle my summer project and share my idea for an alternative heater mounting solution for M809s with a turbo installed (may work for other models also). This all started with the question of how to mount a...
