M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

I have thought about the same idea of a tensioner but it seems that I recalled many years back reading that V belts do not like to have "backwards" pressure on the belt as they were not designed for that direction of tension. I agree with the belt strum at idle. LOL Makes me want to bump the...

My best friend works at EV West. Some cool stuff from there.

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

Yeah, sorry to say you are trolling this thread. I don't recall cruzer747 asking for opinions on 8.1L nor looking to swap one at this point in time. I would love to swap to a 8.1L but that will be an issue if/when my 6.2 blows up. Everyone has the right to their own wants, needs and opinions...

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

Yeah, I am kind of in the same boat. The 6.2 in my M1010 isn't very powerful and though the Gear Vendor OD helped drive-ability, it is still a slug and pulling hills is painful and I haven't even gotten it up to the mountains where it will be even worse. I keep swaying between adding a turbo...

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

Glad you made it through and your home was safe. It is crazy this year up in NoCal area. I remember how devastating the fires in San Diego were in 2003 and 2007. We know people who lost their homes and other where the fire came right up to their property. Scary!

I was more using the example of a plate style versus tube style cooler. Size for size, plate style has historically always been better and why almost all auto manufacturers have move to them. This was a huge thing back in my Baja Bug days. Now if you compare a tube style that is 3x bigger...

Don't go with any tube type coolers. They do not cool nearly well enough at a given size compared to a plate style. Highly recommend B&M coolers!!! https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bmm-70274 This would be a great size to put in.

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

Glad you got out and no serious problems. Looks like fun! I was reading the instructions for the B&M Hi-Tek cooler (plate style with fan) and it specifically says you must have air being pulled through the cooler. You have it mounted so the fan is forward of the cooler, in front of the...

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

yeah, some are, some are not reversible. Fingers crossed it works. I know on my '48 Chevy, moving less then 10mph, it forces enough air that is would drop my radiator temps, with the mechanical fan, even at low RPM. I converted to an electric so that is not a problem anymore. :)

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

Yeah, that's your problem. If mounted in front of the radiator, you must have the fan moving air the same direction as air flows through the radiator. It needs to go from the front side to the engine side. If you are "pulling" forward, not only are you fighting airflow when you are driving...

So.... I don't think you have a condenser in front of the radiator unless you added it. I was surprised when I pulled the radiator and I was like "WTH?" Then I remembers, all of the condensers are up in the overhead A/C unit. That's why the A/C line run from the compressor to the box and no...

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

So... unless you have the diagnostic tool, why keep that plug in the truck at all? I recall removing it from my first M1010 which has a connector up under the dash, which will unplug that under dash plug. Then remove it and the mount and nothing more to worry about. Just a thought and one...

    That's a neat idea.

You definitely get better visability and not completely out of place since many times dually trucks would have those.

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

When I had the new wheels installed I took a cleaning die with me and a cordless impact/socket. After they got all of the original, crappy lug nuts off, I ran my cleaning die (which does not remove metal, only cleans the threads) on every stud. It made it easy to install all the new lug nut...

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

No, lug nuts don't self tighten. My guess is the shop used an impact and just hammered them tight. Either lazy or didn't have a correct torque wrench. Overnighting can stretch the threads or fatigue the studs. I ended up replacing all of the lug nuts because a number of them felt tight. New...

M1010 fire rig to camper conversion

GV pros are very easy to install. Gives me gear splitting and living in SoCal, I have a lot of mountains to cross over to get to anywhere. Having a "2.5" gear could be very useful when 2nd is to high and 3rd is to low. I can get it with a fixed yoke and use a slip joint driveshaft, so if any...

Nice! I am still on the fence between doing the 700r4 swap or Gear Vendors. Pros and cons to both. Excited to see how this works for you.

Well I am convinced and looking at mine, I do not have it. Just ordered one off Ebay.

I have read on some other forums (can't recall now which ones) that GM stopped using that bar as it was leading to cracked trans cases. Just something might want to research more.
