Thanks for the update, Duncan, learning a lot about the Tatra from your posts.
I end up doing a lot of those same kind of projects due to limited funds, Take something apart and end up spending a lot on small parts anyway....no way around it. :-)
Well done Duncan!
How important would you say that the looking diffs are, how bad does it get on the course without them?
Looks great!
(4km/l =9.3 mpg)
It's when the extreme conditions are considered when the odd design solutions begin to make sense, like the draining oil filter canisters on our military multifuel engines. They drain to make it possible to heat all the oil in the oilpan.
Okay, thank you for having patience with my questions and taking the time to respond!
My 5-ton starter is rated about 9KW.
At low temperatures the oil is supposed to be changed to a much less viscous 10W and at extreme low temps, the coolant/oil pan/battery heater is supposed to be used to make...
Looks solid! Nice work, Duncan.
Will you be installing the fuel burning heater and where will it end up?
How much of the dash/instrumentation if any, came with the new cab?
Since you are on the electrical now, how about welding a "static" ground connection to your tank. The ground will be important for any fuel level sending unit and/or pump you might install.
A relay can be used to switch the fuel gauge as you select the right or left fuel tank or a double pole...
IMHO, add a drain, checking for water is so much easier that way. Get one that requires an internal hex drive or something a little odd to slow down a potential thief.
Good job on the tank Duncan, you need to think about cleaning slag and other debris from the inside, though. Also a possible coating to keep rust away. I'm using old steel tanks as subs for the original aluminum tanks (long gone and hard to find) on my 8x8 and added a magnetic filter in line to...
Thanks, Duncan! To take it a little further, does the unit come apart for visual inspection of the combustion chamber, if so, how is it sealed? That seal is a weak spot on the Benmar heater, being exposed to high temperature and not surviving a very long time in storage.
How is the fuel...
Congrats Duncan!
Have you tested the glow plugs (igniters) separately to see if they are functional?
Also, didn't John C mention that most Russian heaters are gasoline fired (post #629), as you know diesel is a lot harder to vaporize/ignite than gasoline.
Don't think you answered the question I...
