    I'd still suggest that the 84 TM is superseded by the 1994 TM, unless there is a newer version than that, that's the one I would base my use on.

    The tow bar TM shows this. The towed load weight limit of the prime mover shall not be exceeded. Refer to towing vehicle’s -10 (operator’s) manual for speed limits.

    For the sake of this thread, let's only discuss flat/wheel towing with a tow bar, as the OP was doing when this situation occured. Here are two different tow bar TMs. Open them and read them. If you do not already have them saved on your computer, save them!

    If the new lynch pins were "foreign" manufactured, I have seen the rings come out of the head with one or two uses. The quality of "foreign lynch pins is very low(non spring steel rings). There's a good reason TSC or ACE can sell them, 10 for a dollar.

    I think the lynch pin failed for some reason, and allowed the 1" pin to come out. The ring can come out of the head of the lynch pin, then there is nothing to hold the lynch pin in.

    One last detail on the correct pin, it has the flat side on the head. It has to be installed so that the flat is against the tow bar flat, so it can not rotate in the hole.(causing the lynch pin to be damaged and it could fall out)

    Adam, are you sure it broke? or could it have fallen out? Was the pin the correct one for a tow bar that has a 3/16" pin hole that uses a lynch pin? or was it a normal bumper shackle pin that uses a hairpin ?
