    The compression release should only be used when spinning the engine to purge air from the fuel system, never for starting.

    It puts a large amount of stress and wear on the mechanism. Fred was adamant not to use the compression release while starting. It is also not needed if you have a good battery installed.

    Due to low sulfur fuel and corresponding lack of lubricity of the fuel, I always add Opti-Lube XPD diesel fuel additive to the fuel on my M1030M1. In my opinion, this is the best diesel fuel additive around for lubricity. Also, never use the compression release lever while starting the engine.
