11r22.5 vs 1400r20

My m923a2 (8.3/allison) has 1400r20s on it now and I’m considering swapping to budd wheels and 11r22.5 for 2 reasons. One is loading height, as this truck is going to have a dump bed installed on it.

The second reason and the one I’m really here to ask about is performance difference. Will these tires enhance my power in acceleration and braking?

The truck Will be on the road commercially and pulling a 15gvw trailer

Currently the truck with the 1400r20s will shift into 5th at 50 miles an hour, and then truck on through what I believe to be about 66 miles per hour as the Speedo only goes to 60. How much top end will I lose with the 11rs

I have an M925A2 pulling an M322 trailer loaded with about 15K on it. I like my 14.00 R20's but they need to be replaced. I will not go to a smaller tire. I need top-end speed over low-end pulling power so I will be going to the 16.00 R20's. You will gain power off the line but will lose 5-7 miles per hour on the top end. Braking will be the exact same. The brakes on these trucks are amazing. Hope this helps

The other option is look for a set of 11r24's off a M916/M920 if you like how it handles right now. They're very close to a 14 and you can dual them up of course.

Truck will never pass inspection with 11R24 tube types and if you blow one you won't find another. So don't consider that route.


You would be better going with 11R24.5s little taller than 22.5s but heavier tires are available. You would drop about 8mph from 1400s to 11R 24.5s which are 44in tall.

You would want to run a 425 65R22.5 on the steer for wider stance and better handling. The 425s equal the 11R24.5s.

I've got a set of 8 11R24.5s and 8 12R24.5s on wheels if you are looking
