1987 M998 6.2L Starter Problem

I have a new to me 1987 M998 with the 6.2L engine that I got this summer.

It started and ran fine until last week when it wouldn't crank the engine over.

When I tried to start the truck it cranked what sounded like 1/2 a turn, followed by a grinding noise from the starter.

I pulled the cover off the starter to take a look and when you try to start it, the bendix pops out and engages with the flex plate, but the shaft is free spinning under it. I attached a video.

I'm not sure how the starter works, does the free spinning bendix gear mean there is a broken linkage in the starter?

Or is there something with the flex plate that keeps the bendix from turning it?

I've seen mentions of turn the crankshaft manually but haven't found a thread that tell me how to do it,
