[2][/2]Ok Guys, I called Memphis Equipement and asked for a whistling Turbo, I explained that mine didnt whistle and I wanted one that did. The parts man said they all whistle. I tried to explain to him that some dont and some do, 1C &1D. their mechanic said he only knows of one kind and it whistles. He said something may be wrong with mine? Ok, now i'm totaly confused. I have herd some pretty noisy whistlers, and some like mine thats just loud with no whistle??? What is the deal?
They gave me the impression that they were all the same? he did say that Schweitzer made all of them. They rebuild them there at their buisness for $750.00 + $100.00 core charge.

I fineally got my big but under the hood today, and got the data off the data plate.

Loose Deuce,

I'm no expert but as far as I was told the 1C is the whistler. $750.00 is lots of cash Check around, (ebay etc...) you will find one if you wait long enough

You are correct. Not only is there a difference in sound, there's a difference in size as well. The impellers inside the 1C are smaller and travel far beyond the speed of sound and in effect rip the air causing the "whistle". The 1D is larger and does not have the same effect.

P.S.- Memphis seems to be where all the rich boys look for tax write-offs.

Desert Rat, Are the turbo bodys the same size? or is it just the guts inside that make the difference ? Can you just change the insides? I need to study up on this subject, is there a web site that specializes in Deuce turbos??? I have all the info in the archives copied.

LD, The turbo's are different size's, the 1C is smaller. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 1D provides much more air, thus better mileage. Of coarse I would much rather hear that "Whistle"... Than save some $... on some fuel

You're right. the 1D is physically larger, but all the holes and mounts are the same so you can swap one for the other. I have a 1D and love it. Without any modifications I get 8.4 mpg. I like quiet, um, er, well as quiet as I can get that is. The 1D does not whistle, but it has plenty of noise. I'm looking to get some flex pipe from a shop here and a muffler from DieselSmoke when he gets his muffler figured out. I prefer stealth, y'know S.B.D.

You might get away with being a little quieter, but after you get the M109 painted desert tan, it will be hard not to see a "sand dune" sneaking up on them!

The 1C and 1D turbos are different as you fellows have figured out. 1C is a high pressure turbo and 1D is a low pressure. The 1D does whistle but with a stock pipe exhaust system the resignating sound from the pipe and through your cab makes it hard to hear. When can hear our 1D turbo as some of you know we have a blow through muffler (no baffles) it does not decrease horsepower. The 1D is a larger turbo with approx. 4 to 5 horsepower gain over the 1C. And as some of you know we get excellent fuel mileage 13-14 mpg plus it runs on synthetic oils and lubs. Keep on DEUCEING.

My deuce is a 1C and has a "Schwitzer" turbo and it won't whistle, I was told the impeller was plugged up so I went and had it rebuilt and still no whistle. My buddy has three M-35A2's which two are C's and one is a D and they whistle. Now the turbo's on his trucks are all made by "Air Research" so I just figured that only "Air Research" turbo's whistled. I then came across another M-35A2C that whistled and his turbo was a "Schwitzer"!!! Sooo I give up!!

I have a Schwitzer in mine and it whistles like crazy. There was an article a while back on the Multifuel engines in MV Magazine. David Doyle wrote it and it had a section on identifying the -1C turbo. I'll have to dig it up. I can probably scare up a -1C for whoever was looking for it. I've gotten 11MPG with my -1c before!

Hey Ken
My sister saw your M-275 going up the road the other day while she was talking to me on the cell. I recently made two trips in my deuce up to Ft Pierce to shoot a TV series ( King of the Jungle II & III) and I was getting 11mpg at 52mph (2350rpm).

Well, I guess I will forget about that whistler for now then, If it cuts back on hourse power and fuel mileage. I already have the weakest diesel I think they make in my truck anyway. Herculeas 134 HP on engine data plate.

My 1C has 140hp printed on the block nomenclature plate. The purpose of the turbo on the LDT's was not to get more performance but to meet the EPA's Clean Air Act.
